The Legend Of Vox Machina Season 4 Introduces Another Key Campaign Character, Reveals Critical Role

As Critical Role wraps up its current storyline, a fan-favorite character will appear in season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina.

The new season of the popular Prime Video fantasy series begins a year after the events of the last one. The heroes had gone their separate ways – Vex and Percy returned to Whitestone, Vax and Keyleth set off on a sea voyage, Scanlan traveled with Kaylie to work on their relationship, and Grog and Pike stayed together. But when a dangerous cult called The Whispered One starts gaining power, the group must reunite to save the world.

Before the new season premiered, Grant Hermanns from ScreenRant spoke with Sam Riegel and Travis Willingham for a feature article about The Legend of Vox Machina. They talked about Wayne Brady joining the cast as the beloved character Taryon Darrington, and then revealed that Jon Heder, Andy Serkis, Sara Ramirez, and Mindy Sterling will also be appearing in the new season.

While remaining tight-lipped about Andy Serkis’ character, Matthew Mercer shared that Travis Willingham will return as Lionel Gayheart, the character he played in their first campaign. Mercer expressed their excitement about Willingham’s willingness to reprise the role. He also mentioned that Willingham is an old friend they’ve collaborated with on various animated projects.

It was fantastic having Sam Riegel back in the recording booth. We were all thrilled to work with Andy Serkis, who’s become a friend, and are huge admirers of his incredible voice work. Even as experienced voice actors ourselves, we were all impressed and had a lot to learn from him. It’s always a pleasure working with a true legend.

Willingham agreed with Riegel about how excited they were to have Serkis join the cast of The Legend of Vox Machina season 4. He admitted they’re huge Lord of the Rings fans and were thrilled to work with actors from the franchise, though Elijah Wood hasn’t joined them yet. Willingham especially expressed wanting to work with Serkis to potentially have him play Sméagol or Gollum, praising Serkis’ incredible vocal range and talent in the recording booth.

We’ve had Andy Serkis on our radar since the start, because of his amazing vocal range and how effortlessly he performs. When he really gets into a character, it’s fantastic to watch. It was a real pleasure and honor to work with him.

Along with news about how he was cast, ScreenRant is excited to share a first look at Lionel Gayheart in season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina. The photos show Heder’s character in what appears to be a serious conversation, and also standing with Scanlan as he uses magic to float on a pillow while watching Percy and Grog. You can see the new images below.

I first met Lionel Gayheart way back in episode 99, during the Taryon Darrington arc. It was so clever – Scanlan, disguised as Aes Adan, sent him to track down Vox Machina after Lionel stumbled upon this ancient ziggurat the Cult of The Whispered One was after. They wanted to use it to summon their god! Even though he was only in three episodes, Lionel instantly became one of my favorite characters. He was hilarious playing off of Grog, and just had this really upbeat, cheerful vibe that was infectious. He really made those episodes special.

With season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina focusing on the story of Taryon Darrington and featuring actor Brady, fans are anticipating an appearance by Lionel. It’s currently unknown how significant Lionel’s role will be this season, or if it will lead to him joining the Darrington Brigade in future adventures.

It’s also intriguing that Andy Serkis’ character for the fourth season of The Legend of Vox Machina is a secret. The Emmy-winning actor has excelled at playing both heroes and villains. Given the upcoming arrival of The Whispered One, and hints that Critical Role is letting Serkis fully showcase his vocal talents, he seems ideally suited to play the main villain.

The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 premieres on Prime Video on June 3.
