87-year-old DoorDasher gets thousands of donations to retire after chance encounter

An 87-year-old delivery driver for DoorDash has captured the hearts of people online, who have donated tens of thousands of dollars to help him finally retire.

Many people now earn extra money by delivering food, while others depend on it as their main job, often working for several different delivery services.

Joe Symonds, 87, of Oregon, drives for DoorDash to supplement his retirement income. He originally retired in 2004, but started delivering with DoorDash in 2025 because he needed extra money.

While making a delivery, Symonds got lost and asked Alyona Dikiy for help. Dikiy was so moved by his story that she didn’t just give him directions – she started a GoFundMe to help him retire, shared his story on TikTok, and even gave him $100 to get the fund started.

A GoFundMe campaign started on May 22nd aims to raise $100,000 for Symonds, and has already collected $42,000. A TikTok video about Joe, posted by Dikiy, is also gaining traction, with nearly 400,000 views and over 72,000 likes – meaning Joe’s story is spreading quickly.

Alyona told KOIN 6 News they’ve recently seen a surge in interest from people all over the world, including Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa—where her colleague Joe is from—and Canada.

“It wasn’t just like a community coming together. It was the whole world rooting for you, Joe.”

Symonds says the funds will cover his daily expenses, like medical bills and new clothes he’s needed for a while.

This isn’t the first time social media has rallied around a senior DoorDash driver hoping to retire. Earlier in March, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to support ‘The Pulleys,’ an elderly couple who were using DoorDash to cover their medical expenses.

People online raised nearly $1 million for them, and DoorDash added another $20,000 in donations.
