Horror game creators, Exquisite Corpses, have announced their next title, scheduled for release in 2027. Alongside a new season of content also planned for 2027 and a live-action movie in development, the popular and critically praised series is poised to become a major cultural phenomenon.
Coming in 2025, Exquisite Corpses, created by James Tynion IV and Michael Walsh, is a story set on Halloween night in the town of Oak Valley. The town becomes the arena for a deadly battle between the world’s most notorious killers.
The highly praised comic series, Exquisite Corpses, is about to grow much larger with new spin-off series and adaptations. The recently announced game is just the latest development for this franchise, which is expected to become incredibly popular.
What Is Exquisite Corpses? The Horror Hit Coming for Pop Culture
Exquisite Corpses is a horror series about a deadly competition where assassins, serial killers, and mercenaries fight to the death. This battle royale is orchestrated by thirteen powerful families who secretly control America, and they use the contest every five years to determine who’s in charge.
The show is well-liked because of its imaginative villains – like Rascal Randy, the mascot killer, Fox Mask Killer, the professional hitman, and G4M3R_KlD, who loves gadgets – but also because it realistically portrays the experiences of ordinary people affected by the violence.
Though the masked killers are entertaining, Exquisite Corpses also delivers genuine scares by focusing on the ordinary people caught in the chaos. We follow EMT Laura, outcast Mike, and frightened Jason as they face real horror, initially hidden by the festive atmosphere of Halloween. While they’re all good people, the series has made it clear that not everyone will survive.
The name of this series comes from its unusual way of being created. While creators Tynion and Walsh established the world and its rules, a team called the ‘Corpse Crew’ collaborated to develop the story, determining what happened to both the villains and everyday people. This process is similar to the classic parlor game of the same name, where players contribute to a drawing or story without seeing the whole picture.
Fans can now experience that journey firsthand with a new game that recently launched on Kickstarter and reached its funding goal in just over an hour.
Exquisite Corpses Unleashes Tabletop Card Game
Tiny Onion is running a Kickstarter campaign until June 15th for Exquisite Corpses: The Game. This card game, based on the popular horror comic, lets 4 to 12 players take on the roles of the Thirteen Families. With different ‘killer’ and ‘event’ cards each time you play, every game will be unique.
Tiny Onion describes the new game, planned for an April 2027 release, as follows:
Once every five years on Halloween, America’s richest families participate in a deadly game. Twelve of the world’s most dangerous individuals are placed in a small town, and the last one alive wins. They call it Exquisite Corpses.
Exquisite Corpses: The Game is a fun, easy-to-learn tabletop game for those who enjoy trading card games like Magic: The Gathering or social deduction games like Ultimate Werewolf. Players – anywhere from 4 to 12 – each choose a killer character and then try to eliminate the others through attacks, deception, and negotiation, until only one killer is left standing.
Now you can bring the chaos to game night in your own town!
The project has added extra rewards for backers as funding increases. These ‘stretch goals’ include things like special dice and game pieces, and even the chance to appear in the next season of the comic.
The Exquisite Corpses concept lends itself perfectly to a game adaptation. The story was always meant to be a collaborative effort, with multiple people building upon each other’s contributions to determine how it unfolds – both within the fictional world and in how it was originally created.
Exquisite Corpses’ Shared Universe Is Getting a LOT Bigger
Although the recently released Exquisite Corpses: The Game is generating a lot of excitement, it’s just the first step in a larger plan for the franchise. The Kickstarter campaign also revealed that season two of the comic book is planned for 2027, and that we’ll be getting standalone stories exploring the backstories of the killers Rascal Randy, Fox Mask Killer, and Lone Gunman.
The first release is Exquisite Corpses: Rascal Randy, scheduled to launch on July 8th. It’s created by Tyler Boss and Dylan Burnett, and here’s a quick overview:
THE COTTON-TAILED EXQUISITE CORPSES KILLER GETS A SPINOFF ORIGIN STORY.
The small town of Aurora Springs, New York, is known for only one thing: it’s where the character Rascal Randy originated. But it’s not the person inside the suit that matters – it’s the mascot itself. That person was unremarkable until they first donned the costume and experienced the chilling sensation of taking a life through the suit’s thick gloves.
Aurora Springs is where Rascal Randy the rabbit was created, and he was originally expected to be the most popular cartoon character in the nation. However, a combination of unfortunate events and selfish actions led to a very different outcome.
Okay, so before you dive into Exquisite Corpses Season 1, you need to see this. It shows the last, crazy killing spree of this super memorable villain – he just bursts onto the scene, all wild and unpredictable! And finally, we get the whole story of who Rascal Randy really is, and it’s pretty messed up.
The detailed backstory created for Exquisite Corpses is really paying off. The game’s world is rich enough that each killer has their own compelling story, even beyond the main battle royale where most end up defeated.
Even outside expanding the original series, Exquisite Corpses‘ first season is just one year in a contest going back centuries, giving the franchise immense room to grow, with any other year offering the chance to introduce twelve new killers and chart the internecine conflicts of the Thirteen Families themselves, as well as their influence over American politics and life.
However, if comics and tabletop gaming aren’t your thing, you’re still likely to hear more about Exquisite Corpses soon, thanks to the fact that…
The Exquisite Corpses Movie Is Coming Soon
The Kickstarter campaign has confirmed that a movie based on Exquisite Corpses is in development with Lyrical Media. Tynion will produce the film, and Walsh will serve as executive producer.
While the cast hasn’t been announced yet, the movie will probably be based on the first season of the comic book, bringing the intense battles between its diverse group of killers to life – from the creepy Nurse Pete to the charming but dangerous Pretty Boy. Lyrical Media is also working on adapting Room Service, a short film originally funded by fans on Kickstarter, and will release a prequel comic beforehand.
I’m honestly amazed by how quickly Exquisite Corpses has blown up! It’s not often you see a comic announce a game, a movie, spin-offs, and another season before the first story is even finished. It really shows how much fans love the creators and how exciting everyone finds the whole idea.
2027 looks set to be a big year for Exquisite Corpses, with lots of new related content coming out, including a new game that’s already getting funding. If you haven’t discovered this popular horror story yet, now’s a great time to check it out!
