The new movie The Gorge, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller, is quickly becoming popular. This isn’t the first time it’s gained attention, though.
According to FlixPatrol, the movie The Gorge is now the third most popular film on Apple TV+ worldwide. While it’s behind F1 and Outcome, it’s climbed higher than many other titles, including Highest 2 Lowest and Greyhound, to reach the top three.
In the U.S., the film has moved up to fifth place, just above Guy Ritchie’s Fountain of Youth.
What Is The Gorge — And Why Was It Such a Sleeper Hit?
Zach Dean’s film, The Gorge, quickly became a hit on Apple TV when it was released on Valentine’s Day 2025. Starring Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy as Levi Kane and Drasa, the movie follows two mercenary snipers stationed at opposite sides of a remote gorge. Their mission: prevent anyone from entering and, more importantly, keep the terrifying creatures living inside from getting out.
Throughout the movie, Levi and Drasa begin a forbidden romance while also uncovering a disturbing reality about their jobs. They stumble upon long-hidden secrets that were meant to stay buried, adding to the complexity of their situation.
In addition to Charlize Theron and Anya Taylor-Joy, The Gorge features a strong supporting cast. Sope Dirisu plays Jasper “J.D.” Drake, another mercenary sniper, while William Houston portrays Drasa’s father, Erikas, and Ruta Gedmintas plays a scientist from World War II. Sigourney Weaver also stars as Levi and Drasa’s employer, Bartholomew, a mysterious and foreboding figure.
When it was released, The Gorge received mixed reviews from critics. Currently, Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a 62% “Fresh” rating based on 150 reviews. Viewers seem to like it more, giving it a 74% score on the site’s “Popcornmeter” based on over 2,500 ratings.
Why the Stars of The Gorge Tried to Cut a Couple of Key Sequences from the Film
After The Gorge came out, it was revealed that the filmmakers had tried, but failed, to cut two scenes from the finished movie. One scene shows Teller pretending to play the drums, a nod to his earlier film Whiplash, and the other features the two main characters playing chess, referencing the series The Queen’s Gambit.
Interestingly, neither of those scenes in The Gorge were written to capitalize on Miles Teller or Anya Taylor-Joy’s previous work. Teller said they were actually in the original script, even before he and Taylor-Joy joined the film. In fact, they even tried to cut the scenes at one point.
Taylor-Joy explained they questioned whether a particular scene felt too obvious. The filmmakers, however, felt it was realistic for the characters who were getting to know each other and finding ways to connect despite being separated by the large gorge featured in the movie.
The Gorge is currently available for streaming on Apple TV.
