For a long time, superhero shows haven’t been considered as serious or high-quality as critically acclaimed dramas like The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and The White Lotus. They’ve been seen as separate categories. However, recently, HBO has been leading the way in blurring that line, proving that a superhero story can be as complex and award-winning as any other prestige television show.
In 2019, HBO and Damon Lindelof took on a challenging project: creating a sequel to Alan Moore’s highly acclaimed graphic novel, Watchmen, as a limited series. Watchmen is famous for brilliantly taking apart the superhero genre, and it’s one of the few comic books considered a literary masterpiece. Despite being an unofficial continuation of the story, the series was a success and widely praised as one of the best TV shows of the last ten years.
Lindelof successfully maintained the core ideas of the original comic without simply retelling it. Like the comic, the HBO series Watchmen explores an alternate American history where superheroes existed, but instead of focusing on the Vietnam War, it centers on the 1921 Tulsa race massacre. It remains a powerful critique of society, cleverly presented as a superhero story, but with a modern perspective for today’s audiences.
HBO followed up the success of its critically acclaimed show Watchmen with another hit, The Penguin. Creator Lauren LeFranc transformed a minor villain from a Batman film into a compelling, complex character reminiscent of Tony Soprano. Colin Farrell delivered a standout performance, portraying the initially comical villain as a deeply flawed and captivating individual.
HBO’s new summer series, Lanterns, is a unique take on the superhero genre. While it’s based on Green Lantern, it feels more like a continuation of the gritty detective drama, True Detective.
Lanterns Is Approaching A Space Cop Show As A Grounded Murder Mystery
HBO will debut its new DC series, Lanterns, on August 16th. Created by Tom King, Chris Mundy, and Damon Lindelof (known for Watchmen), it’s shaping up to be the network’s most expansive superhero project yet. While Watchmen and The Penguin previously brought a sophisticated style to comic book adaptations, Watchmen was a standalone story and The Penguin focused on a single villain. Lanterns, however, is set within the larger DC Universe being developed by James Gunn and Peter Safran, meaning it will connect with shows like Superman and the upcoming Supergirl. However, it will offer a very different feel, style, and genre compared to those other series.
The first trailer for the Lanterns series caused some online debate. Many fans commented that it felt too realistic and lacked the vibrant, action-packed feel they expect from a Green Lantern story – it wasn’t very visually exciting. Traditionally, Green Lantern focuses on an intergalactic police force traveling to strange planets and battling aliens, all presented with bright, colorful imagery. So, when the trailer appeared to be more similar in tone to a crime drama like Mare of Easttown than a space adventure like Guardians of the Galaxy, some comic book readers were disappointed.
While the Green Lanterns are usually known as intergalactic law enforcement, this story grounds itself in a Nebraska murder investigation. In terms of mood and style, it feels a lot like a fifth season of True Detective. The two main detectives both have magical rings that create green illusions, but beyond that, they’re very similar to Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey – serious and investigating dark, disturbing crimes and conducting intense police questioning.
HBO has shown it can transform superhero stories, like it did with Watchmen, into critically acclaimed shows similar to Mad Men. However, Lanterns will be the real challenge to see if they can do it again.
