Eric Kripke’s Involvement In The Boys’ Future Spinoffs Clarified After Divisive Finale

The Boys is facing a major change.

The popular and often controversial superhero series The Boys on Prime Video has ended after five seasons. While the show, featuring stars like Antony Starr, Karl Urban, and Jack Quaid, was a huge success and broke viewership records, the final episode received a lot of negative feedback. It currently has a disappointing 52% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the lowest-rated installment in the entire series.

The final season, and especially the last episode, of The Boys disappointed many dedicated fans, who felt showrunner Eric Kripke didn’t fulfill the expectations set throughout the series. Kripke recently spoke with Rolling Stone about the divisive finale and his future plans for the franchise, including spin-off shows like Vought Rising and The Boys: Mexico, and confirmed his continued involvement.

I’m eager to explore new creative projects and universes, but I also want to stay involved with the Vought Cinematic Universe to ensure everything maintains a high standard. I’ll be an advisor and help with quality control. I’ve already fulfilled my vision with ‘The Boys,’ and now ‘Vought Rising’ is Paul Grellong’s chance to bring his own passion to life. I want each show to feel special and unique, not just like another interchangeable product.

Every story should be distinctive, unusual, and stand on its own, driven by someone’s genuine enthusiasm. Like how ‘Gen V’ is a separate show from ‘The Boys,’ and ‘Vought Rising’ will be different still—even though they all have a similar style and feel, they’ll each explore different themes and feature unique characters.

For fans unhappy with the finale of The Boys, the news that Eric Kripke is stepping down as showrunner for future projects is likely welcome. He won’t be leaving the franchise entirely, though; he’ll continue as a consultant. Kripke has announced that David Grellong, previously known for his work on Scorpion and Hawaii Five-0, will lead the new series Vought Rising. This show will explore the history of Vought International and reveal the origins of Soldier Boy (played by Jensen Ackles).

Following the series finale, Kripke responded to fans worried about the fate of their favorite characters in The Boys. While acknowledging some disappointment expressed online, he remains confident in the show’s overall success, pointing to strong streaming numbers and satisfying character arcs.

Our priority was always the characters and making sure each of them had a complete and rewarding story arc. That was my biggest focus, and I believe we largely succeeded. It’s been tough, though, seeing the intense and often negative reactions online, and I’ll admit I was pretty upset by it at times.

Season Five is already our most popular season, reaching 57 million viewers in just 39 days. It’s a good reminder that what happens online doesn’t always reflect reality. It’s easy to get caught up in online reactions and think they represent everyone’s views, but that’s rarely the case – it’s just a small part of the overall picture. While online opinions are valid, it’s reassuring to remember they don’t represent what most people actually think.

Now that The Boys has finished its run, it’s still a popular show for Prime Video, and more spin-offs are planned. However, the cancellation of Gen V after two seasons leaves the fate of some characters, like Marie Moreau, uncertain. While the creator, Kripke, has promised to wrap up their storylines, it remains to be seen if and how that will happen.

The Boys is available to stream on Prime Video.
