Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have shared why The Mandalorian and Grogu’s story breaks from typical Star Wars patterns.
Certain things in the Star Wars films have become instantly recognizable, like the opening text crawl with John Williams’ music, a character saying, “I have a bad feeling about this,” the Wilhelm scream sound effect, and Anthony Daniels appearing in a role. However, as the Star Wars story moves beyond the Skywalker family, some of these familiar elements are being left out or changed instead of consistently appearing in new films.
In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly for their Debunked series, Jon Favreau explained that The Mandalorian and Grogu begins with text on screen instead of a traditional opening crawl because the crawl was specific to the Star Wars films focusing on the Skywalker family. Neither Solo nor Rogue One used one.
Dave Filoni pointed out that many of the Star Wars projects on Disney+ include a brief introduction to set the scene. Ahsoka has something similar to the classic opening crawl, but it’s presented differently – it’s red and appears vertically without scrolling back. Filoni enjoys how this introductory text creates a feeling of ongoing story, like a serial. However, the traditional Star Wars crawl is generally reserved for the main saga films.
Favreau remembers being captivated by the classic opening crawl as a child, and that feeling shapes his current approach to using it. He believes it should be reserved for major Star Wars stories. As Dave Filoni explained, with so much new Star Wars content being created, they now only use the crawl for the main saga films to maintain its special impact.
The opening crawl of The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s story sets the scene by briefly explaining the threat of the remaining Imperial forces and how Din Djarin and Grogu are fighting against them. Unlike Rogue One, which skipped the opening text, Solo used it to highlight the role of the galaxy’s criminal organizations. More recently, on Disney+, both Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew used opening text to provide context – Skeleton Crew explained the prevalence of piracy during the New Republic era.
The next Star Wars film, Starfighter, will be directed by Shawn Levy and star Ryan Gosling. It’s scheduled to hit theaters on May 28, 2027. Like other recent Star Wars movies, it likely won’t have the classic opening crawl. The future of Episode X is uncertain, but Simon Kinberg is working on a trilogy that could become the next set of main Star Wars films, and potentially include the traditional opening crawl.
Although The Mandalorian and Grogu continues the story from three seasons of The Mandalorian and their guest appearances in The Book of Boba Fett, the movie is built to be enjoyed by anyone, even if they’re new to Star Wars. It quickly jumps into the action with Din and Grogu trying to defeat an Imperial warlord and his army, mirroring the “serial” storytelling style Filoni described.
Jon Favreau directed The Mandalorian and Grogu, and he co-wrote the screenplay with Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor. Both Favreau and Filoni also served as executive producers. Following Kathleen Kennedy’s retirement, Filoni is now co-president of Lucasfilm alongside Lynwen Brennan. While the future of Din and Grogu’s story remains uncertain after their film, the next live-action Star Wars story, Ahsoka season 2, is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in early 2027. The iconic opening crawl may also return.
