5 Dark Superhero Shows Perfect for Fans of The Boys

Now that the popular series The Boys has finished its run with its final episode on May 20, 2026, viewers are searching for similar shows. Over seven seasons, The Boys presented a dark and twisted take on superheroes—imagining a world where they were corrupted by power and controlled by corporations. The show focused on the intense rivalry between the powerful, yet disturbed, Homelander (Anthony Starr) and Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), who led the group trying to fight back.

Despite some criticism during its final season, the finale of The Boys delivered a satisfying conclusion. The world of The Boys is growing with spin-offs like the live-action Gen V, the animated The Boys Presents: Diabolical, and upcoming shows Vought Rising and The Boys: Mexico. But if you enjoyed The Boys, there are other excellent, similarly dark and realistic superhero shows worth checking out.

Invincible Is The Boys’ Perfect Animated Counterpart

The animated series Invincible debuted on Prime Video in 2021. Based on the comic book by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley, it’s a great animated match for The Boys. Like The Boys, it delivers intense, uncompromising action, but also combines that with heartfelt moments and realistic emotional depth.

Both shows take apart the traditional superhero formula and feature intense violence, but they explore mature and dark themes in very different ways. Invincible centers around Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), a young man who develops superpowers and becomes the hero of the title, learning the ropes from his father, Omni-Man – widely considered the planet’s strongest superhero.

Similar to the show The Boys, Invincible features a hidden conspiracy and reveals dark secrets about its characters. Both series powerfully demonstrate the serious repercussions of the characters’ choices, with complex villains like Homelander and Omni-Man. They also focus on how characters change and mature over time, making The Boys and Invincible a compelling combination.

The Umbrella Academy Surprisingly Shares Many Themes With The Boys

Between 2019 and 2024, Netflix released four seasons of The Umbrella Academy. Like The Boys and Watchmen before it, the show is based on a comic book series—this one created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá. While The Umbrella Academy appears bright, playful, and enjoyable, it actually tackles similar themes as The Boys.

The series centers on a group of adopted siblings with superpowers who come together again for their father’s funeral, only to discover they must save the world from an upcoming disaster. Similar to The Boys, The Umbrella Academy challenges typical superhero stories by focusing on a team of flawed and often pessimistic individuals with powers.

Like The Boys, The Umbrella Academy now includes some very intense and adult themes.

Peacemaker Is Darkly Funny & Very Violent, Yet Surprisingly Emotional

If you’re a fan of the over-the-top violence, dark comedy, and critical take on politics in The Boys, you’ll likely enjoy Peacemaker. Both shows share similar themes, and Peacemaker doesn’t shy away from intense, R-rated action. Like Billy Butcher, Peacemaker (played by John Cena) is a brutal and flawed character. He combines the nationalistic views of Homelander with Butcher’s fighting style and willingness to do whatever it takes, making him a complex and compelling character.

Both The Boys and Peacemaker are known for their fast-paced, hilarious, and often shocking conversations, combined with thrilling and well-done action scenes. What’s surprising is that beneath all the chaos, both shows also offer thoughtful explorations of what makes their characters – both good and bad – tick.

Misfits Is An Iconic British Superhero Series

Similar to characters in shows like The Boys and Gen V, the superheroes in Misfits develop powers that are linked to their personal weaknesses. However, they quickly discover these abilities are more trouble than they’re worth. The show aired for five seasons from 2009 to 2013.

In the series Wertham, a group of young offenders performing community service suddenly develop superpowers after a strange storm. Like the characters in The Boys, we find ourselves supporting flawed and complex individuals. Wertham and The Boys both offer a realistic, relatable, and darkly humorous take on the superhero genre, complete with plenty of mature action, making them ideal shows to watch together.

As a huge fan of shows like The Boys, I was completely hooked by the dark humor in Misfits. It’s just as wild, over-the-top, and doesn’t shy away from being offensive – seriously, it’s right up there! Both shows are brilliant at taking these crazy “what if?” scenarios with superpowers and running with them. Misfits is a bit smaller in scope, but honestly, it feels like a perfect companion piece to The Boys. If you love one, you absolutely need to check out the other!

Watchmen Is One of HBO’s Most Acclaimed Limited Series

HBO’s 2019 series Watchmen is a sequel to a famous DC Comics event from 1986, and quickly became one of the network’s most acclaimed limited series. Like The Boys, it offers a mature, realistic, and often gritty take on superheroes, making it a great choice for your next binge-watch.

As a huge movie and TV fan, I’ve been really impressed with how both The Boys and Watchmen tackle the superhero genre. They both brilliantly break down the traditional myths around these characters and make them feel incredibly real. But they do it in very different ways. The Boys is this wild, satirical ride that shows you what would really happen if superheroes were owned by corporations – it’s darkly funny and pretty shocking. Watchmen, on the other hand, is a much more serious and emotional story. It really digs into themes of historical trauma and the abuse of power, and it feels incredibly relevant to what’s happening in the world around us.

Both series demonstrate that giving immense power to even well-intentioned heroes is inherently risky, and they both center on imperfect, relatable main characters. However, Watchmen offers more action, excitement, and overall spectacle.
