Bungie planning “significant” layoffs and Destiny 3 not in active production: report

Reports indicate that Bungie is planning major layoffs and has no plans currently underway to develop Destiny 3.

As a long-time Destiny 2 player, I was pretty bummed to hear from Bungie on May 21st that the update coming June 9th, called the Monument of Triumph, will be the last major content release for the game. It basically means they’re wrapping up active development after years of supporting it since it first came out in 2017.

Destiny 2 is a popular game, often attracting over 100,000 players on Steam at its busiest. However, player numbers decreased after the release of the Lightfall expansion in 2023. Although the 2024 expansion, The Final Shape, brought some players back, the game never quite returned to its previous peak.

Destiny 3 “not in active production

After Bungie announced they were finishing active development on Destiny 2, many fans hoped they were already secretly working on a new game.

Sources familiar with Bungie’s plans told Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier that the studio is planning layoffs once development on Destiny 2 wraps up. He also reported that Destiny 3 isn’t currently being worked on.

So, I heard from someone inside Bungie that they’re actually working on a bunch of new ideas – even thinking about future Destiny games! But nothing’s been officially approved yet, it’s all still in the early stages of development and testing.

Okay, so this is pretty big news for us Destiny players. Bungie is doing layoffs after wrapping up with Destiny 2. And, unfortunately, Destiny 3 isn’t currently being worked on – it’s not in development right now. They are brainstorming new games, including potentially more Destiny stuff, but nothing’s been officially approved yet. You can read more about it here: www.bloomberg.com/news/article…

According to Schreier, Bungie hadn’t started Destiny 2 because they were figuring out the cost of making it.

Many players have questioned why Bungie didn’t begin development on Destiny 3 right after the release of The Final Shape two years ago. The simple reason is the significant financial investment it would require.

It’s uncertain if Destiny will end as a series. Bungie hasn’t confirmed its future, but a recent blog post suggested the franchise isn’t being permanently discontinued.

Look, I still love Destiny 2, but Bungie just announced that after the next big expansion, The Final Shape, they’re planning to move beyond just this one game. It sounds like they want the Destiny universe to keep going, but in ways that aren’t tied to Destiny 2 specifically. It’s a little sad, but also exciting to think about what they have planned!

For now, Bungie will probably dedicate all its efforts to Marathon. While the game launched on March 5th to good reviews, it hasn’t gained much traction with players, and recent negative reviews aren’t making things any better.

Launching on June 2nd, the game’s second season will offer more options for casual players, including a mode where you can play against the environment instead of other players.
