Stephen Colbert hosted his last episode of The Late Show last night, marking a bittersweet moment for fans of both the show and late-night comedy. While many viewers found it a sad occasion, former President Donald Trump used the night to celebrate. Trump repeatedly posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, expressing his delight at Colbert’s departure. In a post sent around 2 a.m. Friday, Trump wrote, “Colbert is finally finished at CBS! Amazing that he lasted so long! No talent, no ratings, no life. He was like a dead person. You could take any person off of the street and they would be better than this total jerk. Thank goodness he’s finally gone!”
Later that morning, he continued to boast about the situation, writing, “Stephen Colbert’s departure from CBS marked the ‘Beginning of the End’ for late-night hosts who lack talent, are unpleasant, highly paid, unfunny, and have low ratings.” He predicted others with similar shortcomings would soon follow, concluding with, “May they all Rest in Peace! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
Stephen Colbert often joked about Donald Trump. When CBS canceled The Late Show last summer, the network claimed it was a financial decision due to the difficulties facing late-night television. However, many believed the cancellation was politically motivated, as David Ellison’s Skydance was trying to acquire CBS’s parent company, Paramount, and needed government approval. Now that Colbert is no longer bound by CBS’s broadcast standards, he’s free to criticize Trump more freely, which could create further challenges for the former president.
