Japan is known for its vending machines that sell a huge variety of items, and a recent online article showcased some of the most unusual things you can buy from them in Tokyo.
Need a quick bite or a drink? You can usually find a vending machine nearby with something to satisfy your craving, whether it’s pizza, ramen, or a cool beverage.
These vending machines aren’t limited to just snacks and drinks. You can find all sorts of things inside, like Pokemon cards, anime collectibles, and even some items for adults that I probably shouldn’t mention!
Although there are many (around 5.5 million), it can be hard to find the most fascinating ones. Luckily, this website has compiled a list of machines you definitely shouldn’t miss.
Jihanki Atlas lets you track down bizarre vending machines
Jihanki Atlas is a website all about the fascinating and unusual vending machines you can find in Tokyo. It’s a great resource for locating these machines, and users can even contribute their own discoveries – and there are some truly remarkable ones featured!
Okay, so they have this incredible machine that lets you… eat insects! Seriously. I’m talking tarantulas, if you’re brave enough to channel your inner survival expert. It costs about $17, which honestly, I’m not sure I’d be able to do, but hey, to each their own! Definitely not for everyone, but if you’re feeling adventurous, it’s an option!
Right behind that is a unique item: a canned version of Tokyo! For only $3, you can supposedly capture a little bit of the city. While I’d personally prefer some fresh air from Mt. Fuji, it’s a fun and quirky gift for anyone who loves or misses the hustle and bustle of Tokyo.
Japan is famous for its vending machines – there are over 4 million of them, known locally as ‘jihanki’. While you can find them all over Tokyo, the really unique ones aren’t always easy to spot. That’s why I created Jihanki Atlas, an online map where people can share locations, submit new finds, and confirm the existence of Tokyo’s vending machines. Some popular items you can find include Pokémon plushies and more!

Looking for a truly special snack at the airport? There’s a vending machine that sells high-quality Miyazaki Wagyu beef! It might sound surprising for vending machine fare, but the airport claims it’s authentic. If you’ve got some Japanese Yen to spare before your flight, why not try a small portion?
If you happen to get hayfever while enjoying the cherry blossoms, or just need something to wipe your brow in the summer heat, this traditional handkerchief machine might be perfect. It currently offers handkerchiefs featuring a blue train design, the red brick of Tokyo Station, and an adorable Suica Penguin.
Visit the Jihanki Atlas website and contribute if you’re planning a trip to Japan!
Jihanki Atlas isn’t the only interesting website we’ve seen lately. Back in March, it gained attention for its unique feature: turning Wikipedia articles into collectible and battleable Pokemon-style cards.
