The new Masters of the Universe project could continue the successful run Amazon MGM Studios has been on lately. After Amazon bought MGM Studios in 2022 – gaining access to a huge library of movies and popular franchises like James Bond – the studio has released several films that critics have praised, including Saltburn, Challengers, and The Fire Inside.
The new movie, Masters of the Universe, brings the popular 1980s toys and cartoon to life. Directed by Travis Knight, who also directed Bumblebee, the film stars Nicholas Galitzine as Adam, a man who learns he’s actually He-Man, a prince from another world. He goes back to his home world to defend his kingdom, using a powerful sword and with help from his friends. The movie also features Camila Mendes, Idris Elba, Alison Brie, Morena Baccarin, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, and Jared Leto.
Amazon MGM Studios is releasing Masters soon after the success of Project Hail Mary, their biggest commercial hit to date. Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, earned $668.5 million worldwide. While Masters has the potential to be successful, it may struggle to reach the same box office numbers because it’s entering a crowded movie landscape. Releasing on June 5, 2026, Masters will compete with other major films like Scary Movie, Disclosure Day, Toy Story 5, and Supergirl.
Even if Masters doesn’t become as popular as Project Hail Mary, it’s looking like another critically successful movie from Amazon MGM Studios. Initial reactions are positive, and it could help the studio maintain its impressive track record on Rotten Tomatoes.
Masters Of The Universe Is Receiving Positive Early Reactions
Early reactions to Masters of the Universe are coming in, and many viewers seem to be enjoying it. Perri Nemiroff from Collider called it a surprisingly fun and vibrant movie, while film journalist Scott Menzel described it as campy, wildly entertaining, and full of nonstop action.
Film critic Courtney Howard described the movie as a “colossally epic time,” and the team at The Nerds of Color podcast praised it for fully embracing its fun, over-the-top nature. While not without flaws, the film has generally been well-received. Andrew J. Salazar, managing editor of DiscussingFilm, compared it to the first Thor movie, noting that it starts a little slow but eventually finds its stride with themes of vulnerability and self-importance, leading to a very enjoyable experience.
Despite some criticism, early reactions to Masters of the Universe are promising, and the film might receive a high score on Rotten Tomatoes when official reviews are published. If that happens, it would extend Amazon MGM’s current run of successful releases.
Masters Of The Universe Could Be The Fifth Theatrical Film In A Row From Amazon MGM Studios To Receive A High Critic Score On Rotten Tomatoes
As a movie fan, I’ve been really impressed with what Amazon MGM Studios has been putting out lately! Project Hail Mary wasn’t just a box office success, critics loved it too – it scored a whopping 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. And it’s not a one-off; it’s the fourth movie from them to get a great RT score. It all started with Crime 101, a really cool action thriller with Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Halle Berry, and Barry Keoghan – that one snagged an 84% rating, kicking off this awesome streak!
Following the success of Project Hail Mary, the family film The Sheep Detectives also garnered positive reviews, with a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Then, Is God Is continued the trend, earning a 98% rating. If Masters of the Universe also receives strong reviews, it will mark the fifth consecutive theatrical release from Amazon MGM to achieve this level of critical acclaim. Initial reactions suggest positive reviews are likely, potentially extending the studio’s winning streak.
