Superhero games have improved dramatically since the early days of the Atari 2600, when Superman first appeared in 1979. Now, the genre offers a wide variety of experiences – from massive open-world adventures and story-driven role-playing games to fast-paced fighting games and online shooters featuring popular comic book characters.
Now that the fantastic Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight has arrived, here’s a list of the 15 greatest superhero games ever made. From playing as Spider-Man swinging through New York City to becoming Batman soaring over Gotham or even the Hulk destroying city blocks, there’s a game here for every fan of Marvel and DC comics.
15. X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse

- Release Date: September 20, 2005
- Developer: Raven Software
- Genre: Action RPG
Rise of Apocalypse is an action role-playing game inspired by Marvel’s X-Men comics. Players build a team of both heroes and villains to prevent Apocalypse from conquering the world.
The gameplay isn’t groundbreaking – it’s mostly about fighting enemies and solving easy puzzles – but it’s incredibly enjoyable to create teams of heroes and villains and see how their powers work together. Ever thought about what Toad and Storm would be like as a team? This game lets you experiment and find out!
The game’s RPG features and character customization give it a lot of replayability – you can develop your mutants, learn new abilities, and create a dream team of X-Men. Plus, the straightforward co-op mode makes it easy to play with friends, even those new to the game. The only downside is that the promised sequel featuring Mister Sinister never materialized.
14. The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction

- Release Date: August 23, 2005
- Developer: Radical Entertainment
- Genre: Action-Adventure
Ultimate Destruction is an open-world action game where you play as the Hulk. You’ll battle the military across a city, smashing everything in your path – from buildings and cars to tanks and helicopters. The game focuses on unleashing chaos as the giant green hero, letting you leap across rooftops and use anything you can find as a weapon.
Ultimate Destruction nails what players want from a Hulk game: pure, unadulterated smashing. While it’s a simple concept, the game is incredibly satisfying because you get to tear through a city as the Hulk, causing massive destruction. It’s all about letting loose and wreaking havoc!
The game isn’t just about mindless destruction; it features some truly excellent boss fights, especially the intense battle against Thunderbolt Ross’s Hulkbusters and the bizarre journey into the Hulk’s mind where you fight Devil Hulk. The controls are easy to learn, though the camera can occasionally be as chaotic as the Hulk’s power.
13. Lego Marvel Super Heroes

- Release Date: October 22, 2013
- Developer: TT Games
- Genre: Action-Adventure
This is an action-packed adventure game perfect for families! It features iconic Marvel heroes and villains—like Spider-Man, Iron Man, and the Hulk—in a Lego version of New York City. Players will team up to solve puzzles, battle enemies, and switch between many different superheroes and their unique abilities, including the Fantastic Four and Wolverine.
Lego Marvel Super Heroes is a really fun game that captures the lighthearted spirit of classic comic books. It’s a joyful experience, playfully referencing both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the broader history of Marvel comics with a lot of silly humor.
The game’s huge selection of characters is a major highlight, featuring both lesser-known villains like Wizard and Beetle alongside famous heroes such as Hulk and Iron Man. Switching between these characters and using their different powers keeps the gameplay exciting. Interestingly, it’s also considered by many to be the best Fantastic Four game ever made.
12. Injustice 2

- Release Date: May 16, 2017
- Developer: NetherRealm Studios
- Genre: Fighting
This is a fighting game featuring DC superheroes and villains. The story is set in a different version of the DC universe where Superman has become a ruthless ruler after the loss of Lois Lane. Players can choose to fight as iconic characters like Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Supergirl, and Harley Quinn in locations inspired by the DC world.
I loved the first Injustice because it finally let me answer the age-old question: who’s stronger, Batman or Superman? Injustice 2 takes that awesome idea and cranks it up to eleven! It’s got way more characters to choose from, the fights are even more epic, and the special moves are just ridiculously cool.
Honestly, playing as these characters feels amazing – whether I’m freezing enemies as Captain Cold or just smashing everything as Supergirl, they really feel like they jumped right out of the comics. Brainiac is a fantastic villain, totally capturing that classic, over-the-top vibe. I also love how much you can customize your heroes, tweaking their look and powers to fit your playstyle. My only real gripe? The way you get new gear – the Mother Box system – could definitely use some work. I’d happily ditch that one!
11. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight

- Release Date: May 22, 2026
- Developer: TT Games
- Genre: Action-Adventure
LEGO Batman is an action-packed adventure game that revisits iconic moments from Batman’s history in comics, films, and TV series. Players get to roam around Gotham City, fight famous villains, solve puzzles, and collect a wide variety of characters from the DC universe.
What makes this game great is that it does something different with the Lego formula. Instead of simply being a Lego game featuring Batman, it genuinely feels like a Batman game constructed from Lego bricks.
The game’s combat feels a lot like the Arkham series, making it much more engaging than the simple fighting in previous Lego games. Gotham City is full of things to find, extra missions to complete, and nods to Batman’s 87-year history. Fans will love reliving moments from films like The Dark Knight, enjoying Matt Berry’s funny performance as Bane, and driving around Gotham in the Batmobile – there’s a surprise for Batman enthusiasts around almost every turn.
10. Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes

- Release Date: June 29, 2000
- Developer: Capcom
- Genre: Fighting
Okay, so this game is seriously awesome! It’s a super quick, action-packed fighting game where you get to create your dream team of Marvel and Capcom heroes. Imagine pitting Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man, and the Hulk against characters from Street Fighter and Mega Man in crazy 3-on-3 battles – it’s a total blast! You get to build a team and just jump into the chaos.
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 takes superhero battles and turns them into wild, over-the-top arcade action. Unlike the more strategic, head-to-head fights of Street Fighter, this game is all about speed, flashy moves, and chaotic fun, featuring incredible air combos, team-based attacks, and huge, screen-filling special moves.
Honestly, a huge part of the fun is just messing around and seeing what happens when you pair up totally unexpected characters – like imagining Spider-Man fighting alongside Ryu, or Wolverine teaming up with Iron Man. You can just mash buttons and have a good time, but when you start learning how to link attacks together and pull off crazy combos, that’s when the battles really become something special. Plus, the game just looks and sounds amazing, with its bright, colorful art style and awesome jazzy music. It’s a look that still holds up really well even now.
9. Infamous 2

- Release Date: June 7, 2011
- Developer: Sucker Punch Productions
- Genre: Action-Adventure
In this open-world superhero game, you play as Cole MacGrath, a courier with electric powers. Set in New Marais, a city modeled after New Orleans, you’ll fight monsters, armed groups, and a dangerous enemy called the Beast. A key feature is the ability to decide whether Cole will be a celebrated hero or a terrifying supervillain.
Infamous 2 is a significant improvement over the first game. The city of New Marais is more vibrant and fun to navigate than Empire City, and as you upgrade Cole’s electric abilities, they become incredibly powerful and satisfying to use.
Okay, so the way the game handles choices and how you play as Cole is way better this time. You can really build him into a total hero, saving everyone, or go full-on destructive and just blast through enemies – it’s up to you! Getting around the city is awesome too. They’ve added things like grinding on power lines and parkour, so zipping across the rooftops is a blast. Honestly, my only complaint? I really wish they’d brought back Cole’s yellow jacket. I miss that look!
8. Prototype

- Release Date: June 9, 2009
- Developer: Radical Entertainment
- Genre: Action-Adventure
This action game takes place in a massive, open-world version of New York City, overrun by a dangerous virus. You play as Alex Mercer, a mysterious character with the ability to change his shape. He’s trying to uncover the truth about who he was before the outbreak, and along the way, he develops incredible powers – like super-speed, the ability to blend in with others, and turning his body into powerful weapons.
Prototype is a thrilling game where you unleash incredible powers as you tear through New York City. Playing as Alex Mercer feels unique – he’s not your typical hero, but a powerful, shape-shifting force of nature. You can scale buildings in seconds, soar through the air, destroy military vehicles with massive weaponized arms, and even take the form of your enemies. This creates a wild, unpredictable experience that remains exciting even now.
Being able to change forms keeps the fighting exciting, letting you switch between different attacks – like claws, hammers, and tendrils – to cause as much destruction as you want. Prototype is a wild, chaotic, and over-the-top experience that still feels unique compared to most games in its genre.
7. Marvel’s Midnight Suns

- Release Date: 2022
- Developer: Firaxis Games
- Genre: Tactical RPG
Okay, so this game is a tactical RPG where you get to build your own superhero – they call it ‘The Hunter’ – and then team up with all the big names from Marvel like Iron Man, Blade, Wolverine, Ghost Rider, and Doctor Strange. Basically, we’re all working together to take down this seriously powerful demon named Lilith. It sounds awesome!
I’m a huge fan of Marvel’s Midnight Suns! It’s a really ambitious RPG from the folks at Firaxis, and honestly, I think it doesn’t get enough attention. The best part for me is getting to create my own superhero – The Hunter – and then team up with iconic characters like Iron Man, Blade, Wolverine, and Ghost Rider. There are so many powers and abilities to customize with The Hunter, it’s a ton of fun experimenting and getting ready for those battles!
Battles in this game feel unique compared to other superhero titles. Instead of just pressing buttons repeatedly, you’ll use a combination of card-based powers, the surrounding environment, and strategic positioning. When you’re not fighting, you’ll enjoy spending time with Marvel heroes at the Abbey, which creates a fun, lighthearted atmosphere – almost like a superhero summer camp with a demonic twist.
6. Batman: Arkham Knight

- Release Date: June 23, 2015
- Developer: Rocksteady Studios
- Genre: Action-Adventure
Batman: Arkham Knight is the thrilling conclusion to Rocksteady’s acclaimed Arkham series. In this game, Scarecrow teams up with a new villain, the Arkham Knight, and other iconic foes to finally defeat Batman. Players can explore a massive, detailed Gotham City, using the grappling hook to move between buildings, fighting enemies, investigating crimes, and, for the first time, driving the powerful Batmobile.
We love Arkham Knight because it transforms Gotham City into a warzone and fulfills the dream of driving the Batmobile at full speed through its streets. While some players weren’t fans of the tank combat and the bigger open world isn’t quite as focused as in previous games like Asylum and City, the game is undeniably impressive when you’re in action. The ability to launch the Batmobile directly into battles or fast-paced chases makes Batman feel incredibly powerful.
Rocksteady ramps up the action in Arkham Knight, with massive encounters like Batman battling hordes of enemies at Ace Chemicals and Scarecrow spreading fear throughout Gotham. Combined with the series’ smooth and dynamic combat system and the feeling that Bruce Wayne is pushed to his limits, Arkham Knight remains a thrilling conclusion to the Arkham trilogy.
5. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

- Release Date: October 26, 2021
- Developer: Eidos-Montréal
- Genre: Action-Adventure
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is an action-packed story where you play as Star-Lord, leading the Guardians on a chaotic adventure after a disastrous mission. You’ll battle enemies with Star-Lord’s unique weapons and strategically command your teammates – Rocket, Gamora, Drax, and Groot – in exciting combat.
Guardians of the Galaxy is a fantastic game because it perfectly captures the dynamic between its characters. Rocket, Drax, Gamora, and Groot are constantly bickering and teasing each other, which surprisingly makes them even more endearing. The story is incredibly well-written, blending epic space battles, hilarious comedy, and genuinely touching moments, all while staying true to the strong bond between the Guardians.
While battles can sometimes feel a bit samey and the levels aren’t very open, directing your team during intense fights with a classic rock soundtrack still perfectly captures the wild spirit of the game. Plus, the game keeps things interesting with constant surprises, like huge space monsters, strange planets, and Drax’s predictably bad ideas.
4. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

- Release Date: October 20, 2023
- Developer: Insomniac Games
- Genre: Action-Adventure
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is an open-world action game where you play as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Together, they must defend New York City from threats like Kraven the Hunter and Venom, along with other iconic Spider-Man villains. You can freely switch between the two Spider-Men as you swing through a larger version of New York, using gadgets, web-slinging, and Miles’s new symbiote abilities to fight enemies.
We love this game because Insomniac built on the success of the first Spider-Man, making everything more expansive and exciting. Flying through New York with the Web Wings is a fantastic experience, and being able to play as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales keeps the story and gameplay engaging from start to finish.
The next installment is noticeably more intense, featuring challenging encounters with Kraven the Hunter and Venom that force Peter Parker into some very difficult situations, particularly when the Venom symbiote appears. What really makes this story shine is the connection between Peter and Miles, as they both grapple with the demands of being a hero and the challenges of their everyday lives.
3. Batman: Arkham City

- Release Date: October 18, 2011
- Developer: Rocksteady Studios
- Genre: Action-Adventure
Batman: Arkham City is an action game where the Dark Knight finds himself imprisoned within Arkham City, a dangerous, walled-off district of Gotham overrun by criminals and his most notorious foes. As Batman, you’ll navigate the city using a gliding mechanic, investigate crimes, engage in fast-paced combat, and confront iconic villains like the Joker, Penguin, Two-Face, and Mr. Freeze.
We love Arkham City because it perfectly blends the best aspects of the earlier Arkham Asylum and the later Arkham Knight. It captures the intense, claustrophobic feel of Asylum while also offering a sprawling, open-world Gotham to explore. Gliding through the city as Batman, overlooking a prisoner uprising, remains a thrilling experience, and the combat system makes every fight feel dynamic and comic-book-inspired.
The game is full of fantastic moments, like the exciting battle with Mr. Freeze, the surprising reveal of Clayface, and Joker’s powerful final scenes. With a cast of well-known villains, hidden collectibles from the Riddler, and a constant sense of danger hanging over Gotham, it’s no wonder Arkham City remains a classic superhero game.
2. Marvel’s Spider-Man

- Release Date: September 7, 2018
- Developer: Insomniac Games
- Genre: Action-Adventure
This game lets you play as Spider-Man in a huge, open-world version of New York City. You’ll swing through the city, fight iconic villains like Mister Negative and the Sinister Six, and use cool gadgets and moves in combat. The game also lets you experience Peter Parker’s life outside of being a superhero, balancing his personal relationships and responsibilities.
This is simply the best Spider-Man game ever created. Insomniac Games perfectly captures the thrill of swinging through New York City as Spider-Man. The web-swinging mechanic is crucial for any Spider-Man game, and this one gets it just right – it’s easy to pick up but still allows for amazing moves and combos as you improve. From the start, you’ll feel like a fast, nimble, and powerful hero.
Honestly, fighting as Spider-Man is just so fun! All his cool gadgets and amazing moves, plus battling the Sinister Six, keep you on your toes. Sure, Spider-Man 2 is a visual spectacle, but I think the first game tells a better story. It really nails how exhausting it is for Peter Parker to try and be a hero and have a normal life. It just feels more relatable and impactful to me.
1. Batman: Arkham Asylum

- Release Date: August 25, 2009
- Developer: Rocksteady Studios
- Genre: Action-Adventure
Batman: Arkham Asylum is an action-packed game where Batman finds himself locked inside Arkham Asylum after the Joker takes control. Players navigate the asylum, use detective skills to investigate crimes, and fight inmates using a dynamic combat system. Along the way, you’ll encounter and battle famous villains like Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, and Scarecrow.
Arkham Asylum wasn’t just a fantastic Batman game; it redefined the entire superhero gaming genre. Rocksteady perfectly captured the essence of being the Dark Knight, letting you stealthily stalk enemies before diving into intense, close-quarters combat. The game’s atmosphere is consistently impressive, seamlessly blending elements of horror, comic book action, and psychological suspense as the Joker drives Batman toward the brink of madness.
The haunting Scarecrow sequences are what most players remember from the game. Its smooth, dynamic combat system also proved highly influential, paving the way for similar mechanics in games like Marvel’s Spider-Man and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. But above all, Arkham Asylum truly captured the feeling of being Batman, as fans know him from comics and films.
