The TV show The Boys has come to an end with a dramatic finale featuring several character deaths and a key plot point that the show’s creator had been planning since the start.
It’s common for long-running shows like The Boys to deviate from their initial storylines. This can happen for various reasons – like changes in funding, different writers taking over, or the show adjusting based on how fans react.
However, with ‘The Boys’, things were different, even though the final episodes took significant liberties with the original comic book. Surprisingly, the show’s creator had actually planned the ending involving Butcher and Hughie all along.
Spoilers ahead for the end of The Boys…naturally.
The Boys showrunner knew how Hughie & Butcher would end from Season 1
Showrunner Eric Kripke revealed to Deadline that the series’ surprising finale has been in the works for seven years. He specifically discussed the climactic showdown between Butcher and Hughie, where Butcher is shot after trying to eliminate all Supes with the Supe Virus.

From the start, we always knew we wanted to do that,” Kripke said. He also wanted the endings for those two characters to closely follow the original comics. “Aside from Robin’s death in the first episode, we stayed pretty true to the source material.”
He shared that the scene was a highlight of the episode and the entire season. As a writer, he found it incredibly rewarding to finally connect story elements that had been developing for seven years. He felt it was the emotional core of the show and a satisfying conclusion to the characters’ relationship.
It’s remarkable that a TV show can run for seven years and still deliver an ending that satisfies both its fans and the creators – something many shows, like Game of Thrones, struggle with. This success proves how carefully they’ve been building up clues about the final conflict all along.
So, the last scene with Hughie and Butcher? They totally nailed it, it was just like the comics. But with Homelander, they went in a completely different direction than I expected. It was a real surprise!
