Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 Development Stable Despite Xbox Technical Concerns, Director Says

Unlike the first two Final Fantasy 7 Remake games, which initially came out only for PlayStation consoles-with versions for Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S planned-the third game will be released on multiple platforms at the same time. This means Square Enix is creating the game for various consoles and PC to reach a wider audience, but they don’t believe this will slow down the game’s development.

According to Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi, speaking with Easy Allies (via Eurogamer), they have specific teams for each platform, ensuring their multiplatform strategy doesn’t hinder development. Hamaguchi also admitted that Square Enix encountered some difficulties getting Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth running on Xbox Series X|S, attributing these issues to a “lack of memory“.

Regarding the Xbox version, Hamaguchi explained that, similar to what other developers experienced, they encountered problems with its limited memory capacity when compared to other gaming systems. “I think we did see some issues with the lack of memory compared with other platforms,” Hamaguchi said.

Regarding the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth release on the upcoming Switch 2, Hamaguchi expressed optimism about the development. Square Enix engineers are currently working to optimize the game for both docked and handheld play on the Nintendo console. They are also refining the lighting to enhance the game’s overall visual quality.

Although we don’t yet know when Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will come to Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S, the first game, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, is set to release on both consoles on January 22. A new feature being added is a progression boost, designed to make the game much easier, and this will also be available for PC and PS5 players through an upcoming update.

The third part of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake is still being worked on, and despite the sales for Rebirth not meeting expectations, Hamaguchi stated that the story will end with a strong and well-made conclusion. While it hasn’t been officially announced, producer Tetsuya Nomura recently confirmed that Square Enix has a firm date for revealing the game.
