Hulu Decides Fate of Handmaid’s Tale Spinoff 1 Week Before Finale

With the next-to-last episode of season one now streaming on Hulu, it’s been confirmed that the show will be back for another season. Fans can enjoy the upcoming episode knowing the story isn’t over yet.

Good news for fans! Season 2 of The Testaments has been confirmed. This announcement comes just a week before the Season 1 finale airs on Hulu (and Disney+ outside the US) on May 27th. The Testaments, a continuation of The Handmaid’s Tale, launched with three episodes on April 8th, followed by weekly releases. The first season has a total of ten episodes.

The Testaments Has Become a Streaming Sensation

It’s no surprise that The Testaments has been renewed for another season, considering its strong performance as a streaming series. The show has steadily gained viewers since its debut, with a 20% increase by the fourth episode. In its first eight days, The Testaments reached over 11 million hours of viewing time on Hulu and Disney+. By the eighth episode, global viewership had jumped 76% from the premiere, totaling over 45 million hours streamed worldwide.

Set several years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments reveals that the oppressive regime of Gilead is beginning to weaken. The story centers around three characters: Aunt Lydia, a high-ranking official with secret agendas; Agnes Jemima, a teenager raised within Gilead who starts to doubt the system; and Daisy, a young Canadian who becomes involved in fighting against Gilead.

Some Changes Were Made From the Source Material

Elisabeth Moss, known for her role in The Handmaid’s Tale, made a quick appearance in the new series. The show also features Mabel Li, Brad Alexander, Isolde Ardies, Rowan Blanchard, Mattea Conforti, Zarrin Darnell-Martin, Eva Foote, Amy Seimetz, and Kira Guloien. Bruce Miller, who oversaw The Handmaid’s Tale, created this series, which is based on Margaret Atwood’s novel. In adapting the story for the new show, some details were updated, including the ages of the characters Agnes and Daisy.

Miller explained they had to adjust some character ages. Daisy and Nicole, from The Testaments, were originally the same age as Hannah (Agnes), and Miller wanted to keep that dynamic. While trying to stay true to the source material, the biggest changes were necessary because adapting a book for television requires a different approach to time. In the book, time can shift easily, but with actors, they needed to condense the timeline to make the ages work.

The Testaments is streaming on Hulu.
