Period dramas have long been a favorite among viewers. Shows such as Downton Abbey, Pride and Prejudice, and Bridgerton each have a unique appeal and dedicated followers. Now, a highly praised period drama is gaining popularity again as a new season approaches.
According to FlixPatrol, the show is currently very popular on HBO Max in Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. It’s also made the Top 10 list on HBO Max in the United States this week. This success is notable because the last episode of the season aired nearly a year ago, on August 10, 2025.
The Gilded Age Has Been Dubbed the American Downton Abbey
Originally airing from 2010 to 2015, Downton Abbey is still a very popular and well-regarded British drama over a decade later. Its success led to three follow-up films: Downton Abbey (2019), Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022), and…
Following the huge popularity of his British period drama, Downton Abbey, creator Julian Fellowes aimed to achieve similar success in the United States. He developed The Gilded Age for HBO, a historical drama set in America between the late 1870s and 1890s, a period encompassing the Reconstruction and Progressive Eras.
The United States earned the nickname “The Gilded Age” thanks to Mark Twain’s 1873 novel of the same name. This period was marked by fast economic growth and a huge influx of European immigrants. However, it also saw wealth become concentrated in the hands of a few, leading to increasing economic disparities.
HBO’s The Gilded Age tells the story of a transformative period in American history with a large and talented cast, including Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Taissa Farmiga, Cynthia Nixon, and Christine Baranski. Since it premiered, the show has been well-received by critics.
The Gilded Age Got Better with Each Season
As a huge fan of period dramas, I’ve been following The Gilded Age closely. So far, there are three seasons with a total of 25 episodes. Critics really seem to love it – the first season earned a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 79%. But it’s only gotten better! Both season two and season three have even higher ‘Certified Fresh’ scores – 94% and 96% respectively. It’s fantastic to see a show consistently improving like that.
According to Inkoo Kang of The New Yorker, Season 3 of The Gilded Age is the show’s best yet because the storylines that began earlier finally come to a head. Alison Herman of Variety agrees, noting that after three seasons, the show is more solid than ever.
The Gilded Age is a historical drama that explores a significant period in American history. It combines actual events with compelling characters and increasingly intense storylines. The show has been picked up for a fourth season, and viewers are eagerly anticipating its return.
The Gilded Age is available to stream on HBO Max.
