Haruhi Suzumiya gets 20th anniversary train-only story with original anime cast

To celebrate 20 years of ‘The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya,’ a new story featuring the original voice actors is coming, and it will be released exclusively as an audio drama played on bullet trains in Japan.

Originally appearing in 2006, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya remains a favorite among anime viewers. Fans enjoy its strange and intriguing supernatural mysteries, its fast-paced and funny style, and especially the character of Haruhi Suzumiya.

It’s been a while since fans last saw the famous “Hare Hare Yukai” dance from the end of the anime (if you’re unfamiliar, it’s definitely worth checking out!), but it seems Japan’s train system still remembers this beloved classic.

Haruhi Suzumiya returns with official train collab

Okay, so I just read the announcement – there’s gonna be a huge event based entirely around trains! From June 20th to September 23rd, 2026, they’re doing a ton of cool stuff in Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, and Nishinomiya. Think exclusive stories, actual locations from the anime you can visit, mini-exhibits, and, of course, limited edition merch. It sounds like a must-go for any fan!

There’s even more exciting news: the creator of the series, Nagaru Tanigawa, has written a special audio drama that will be played on trains. It features the original voice actors from the anime, including Aya Hirano as Haruhi and Tomokazu Sugita as Kyon.

In addition to enjoying the story, passengers can test their knowledge with a quiz related to the series and earn special voice clips based on their results. Everyone who participates in the onboard activities can also claim rewards in Nishinomiya, the city that served as inspiration for locations in the anime.

Visitors to the city can also enjoy a digital scavenger hunt that takes them to places featured in the series, such as Nishinomiya Kita High School, Shukugawa Park, Hankyu Nishinomiya-Kitaguchi Station, and the popular Dream coffee shop.

It’s great to have Haruhi-themed trains running again, but it’s not the only exciting train collaboration we’ve seen this year. Earlier in March, Tokyo Metro completely covered trains in purple for a special Pokémon Ditto event.
