Both Microsoft and Halo Studios hinted at a future reveal this summer, timed to happen during the Halo World Championships later this month. The announcement will be made during a panel on Friday, October 24th. However, according to an unconfirmed report, Halo: Combat Evolved, the very first game in the series, is being remade by Virtuos, the studio that also remastered The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion.
Rebs Gaming reports that Virtuos’s studio, Abstraction, is working with Halo Studios to remake Halo, and is responsible for the majority of the development. Xbox Era has since confirmed this information, adding that the remake will use a combination of game engines: the engine from Halo Reach for gameplay, and Unreal Engine 5 for graphics. There’s a possibility this could be the first Halo game available on PlayStation, though this remains unconfirmed.
As a big fan, I remember when Halo: The Master Chief Collection got some amazing accessibility options thanks to the team at Abstraction. One of the coolest things they did was with Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary – the updated version of the very first game. You could literally switch between the new, remastered graphics and the original visuals while you were playing, which was a really neat feature!
Microsoft has let us know for some time that they’re working on several Halo projects. At last year’s Halo World Championships, they showed A New Dawn, a trailer explaining that future Halo games – including Project Foundry – will be built using the Unreal Engine.
The possibility of a remake arrives as the Halo TV series gains popularity on Netflix, quickly becoming a top 10 show. Just last month, Halo Infinite introduced Invasion, a well-loved asymmetrical multiplayer mode originally from Halo: Reach.
