In the City Season-Premiere Recap: A Couple of Things

It’s interesting to consider how different this show could have been if it weren’t for the drama surrounding Summer House, which has dominated social media for many viewers – particularly women and LGBTQ+ individuals who enjoy reality TV. Also, the show’s original direction seemed to shift before that, with the split of Kymanda. The producers appeared to be aiming for a vibe similar to The Valley, focusing on couples and people in their 40s balancing careers, relationships, and family life with a fun social scene. However, at least in the first episode, the show feels more focused on a painful breakup.

It’s understandable that the show centers on Lindsay Hubbard, Kyle Cooke, and Amanda Batula, as they’re the most familiar faces from Summer House. However, after watching Kyle and Amanda struggle for 16 episodes – and with their relationship seemingly over in the season finale – revisiting their issues feels repetitive. What’s even more frustrating is that this rehash is more negative, desperate, and uncomfortable to watch, especially knowing how things will likely end.

Let’s quickly address the situation with Kymanda. Amanda explains to Lindsay that after their time in the Hamptons, she stayed at a hotel for a few days hoping to improve things with Kyle. Their therapist apparently told them they seemed to hate each other – a comment that suggests the therapist might be a Summer House viewer, even if just by chance while at the gym.

When we see Amanda and Kyle next, they’ve just finished therapy. Amanda comes out of the subway hot and bothered, complaining, and Kyle playfully points out she’s wearing a raincoat in the summer. She quickly defends it as a fashion choice, but she’s really frustrated that he doesn’t seem to be taking therapy seriously, especially since he was out late the night before their session. She expresses her effort to salvage the relationship, feeling unsupported by his lack of commitment. The episode centers on this dynamic: Amanda is trying to improve things, Kyle isn’t making progress, he feels unfairly blamed, and they’re repeating the same arguments they’ve had for the past couple of summers. After their fight, Kyle goes out for drinks with the rest of the group, but Amanda declines, not wanting to pretend everything is okay. Kyle explains her absence, but his friend, Kenny, points out that everyone notices when she’s not there.

Okay, so they ended up grabbing drinks on their fourth anniversary, which was… interesting. Apparently, the fourth anniversary gift is keys, and Amanda decided she’s getting her own apartment for a month. She feels like a little space will make hanging out more special, and she’s hoping to recapture some of that initial spark with dates and movie nights. Honestly, I’m skeptical. I love a good romance, but marriage isn’t just about dates and chemistry. It’s about the everyday stuff – the coordinating schedules, the… less glamorous habits, endlessly scrolling to find something to watch and still being dissatisfied. A spark helps, sure, but it’s mostly just a ton of admin. If they can’t even manage the practicalities – and especially the money stuff – of living together, they’re probably better off calling movers. It feels like they’re focusing on the symptoms, not the real problem.

Now, let’s talk about the new people joining the group. First, there’s Yvonne Najor, who recently spent time with Lindsay in the Hamptons. They’re close friends, and Yvonne seems like someone who could offer Lindsay honest advice. Yvonne is married to Nick Barber, who doesn’t seem to be very aware of what’s going on around him. Yvonne is eager to start a family, believing Nick was on board with the idea, but he’s becoming increasingly anxious as they get closer to trying to conceive. She also revealed that she once took a trip without telling him, and he didn’t even realize she was gone for days! It’s hard to believe he didn’t notice she wasn’t around – no extra dishes, laundry, or empty drinks? How can you not notice your partner is missing for that long? It’s a really strange situation.

We’re introduced to Georgina Ferzli, a dermatologist living in the trendy TriBeCa neighborhood. She’s a mom of two who went through a difficult time when her ex-husband left while she was pregnant with her second child – a story I’m definitely interested in hearing more about! Georgina is single and open to dating, and she’s so fun and spontaneous that she even keeps party clothes at the office for unexpected nights out, like when her friends Lindsay and Yvonne surprise her with rooftop drinks in Midtown. She’s wonderfully eccentric, and I’m excited to learn more about her.

We’re introduced to Kenny Martin through Kyle. Originally from Michigan, Kenny spent years working in finance on Wall Street and was one of the first investors in Loverboy. He meets with Kyle for lunch to discuss his struggling business, which doesn’t seem to be improving. Kenny has been dating Whitney Fransway for about six months, and she recently moved to New York to be with him, potentially hoping to appear on the show. It turns out Whitney was previously a contestant on The Bachelor, continuing the trend of reality TV contestants moving to Bravo shows. (I’m not a fan of that world, so feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!)

Okay, so we were all out having drinks, and honestly, the whole group started grilling Kenny about his relationship with Whitney. I chimed in and said it’s a huge step for someone to move across the country without at least some commitment, like a ring or a promise. And Kenny? He actually said to me – someone he barely knows – that he was getting “I hate men” vibes! Poor Kenny. This is his first time on a reality show, and he’s going up against Lindsay, who is a master of this game. Seriously, he’s way in over his head. And it turned out I was right – he wasn’t giving Whitney the attention she deserved, and Lindsay totally saw through him all along!

The group met for cocktails at The Garrett, a hidden bar above a Five Guys restaurant owned by a guy named Gavin Moseley. It was funny that Lindsay didn’t mention the name, since her first boyfriend on Summer House was also named Garrett—not the fast-food place! (That was actually who I hooked up with last time.) We didn’t learn much about Gavin, but I have to admit, I’m a little bit into him. Sorry, Kyle! We also haven’t met Katie Arundel yet, who’s Amanda’s best friend from childhood, but since Amanda isn’t around, it looks like we won’t be meeting Katie either.

It’s nice to see Andrea Denver and his wife, Lexi Sundin, again. Andrea always looked great on Summer House, though he wasn’t a very big participant. Lexi seems sweet, but a bit reserved, and I’m wondering how they’ll handle being around such a big and lively group – it’s a group so large they barely fit anywhere!

Danielle Olivera is a particularly controversial figure in the Real Housewives world, especially considering her falling out with Lindsay. They were once incredibly close, but now Lindsay seems to want nothing to do with her. At a recent gathering, Lindsay was clearly avoiding Danielle, just as she did at the Soft Bar opening. When Danielle approached Lindsay and suggested getting coffee or a drink, Lindsay responded with a hesitant “Let me think about it.” It was a surprisingly polite rejection, and it’s amazing Danielle didn’t seem completely devastated by it.

During a private conversation, a producer questioned Lindsay about her ongoing problems with Danielle. Lindsay immediately seemed ready to present evidence, suggesting she had a detailed record on her phone. This wasn’t a chronological list, but rather organized by season of the show – as if she’d meticulously reviewed past reunions to document every offense. (It’s clear Lindsay doesn’t need a reminder of anything Danielle has done.) She cited instances like Danielle being upset she wasn’t informed about Lindsay’s engagement, being unkind when Lindsay announced her pregnancy, and an inappropriate act with Carl shortly after his first breakup with Lindsay. (The author, like Kyle, finds this behavior distasteful.) These accusations are all accurate, and it’s obvious this will create significant conflict between them throughout the season.

Lindsay is barely lifting a finger. While enjoying drinks with her friends, Amanda reveals that Katie verified a rumor: Danielle’s new boyfriend, Eoin Heavey (pronounced “Owen”), an Irish tennis player, is still married. This is especially juicy considering Eoin just moved in with Danielle, who also just announced she’s pregnant. Amanda is playing with fire sharing this, as she’s likely about to announce her separation from Kyle, and will claim her actions regarding their son, West, are irrelevant. Eoin and Danielle will likely use the same defense. But Lindsay doesn’t care about any of that – she’s thrilled to have this information. She bursts into a huge laugh that resonates through the bar, echoing over the city alongside traffic and the sounds of urban life. It’s a laugh that feels like it reaches every corner of Manhattan, and it’s exactly the kind of moment viewers were hoping to see.
