Darth Vader is incredibly powerful in the world of Star Wars, but he isn’t unbeatable. A few characters with strong connections to the Force could potentially defeat him, either in a lightsaber duel or by using their Force abilities.
Darth Vader immediately established himself as a powerful figure in the Star Wars saga, famously shown forcefully restraining Captain Antilles aboard the Tantive IV in A New Hope. For over twenty years, as Emperor Palpatine’s top executor and commander of the Imperial Fleet, this imposing, cybernetically-enhanced Sith Lord was one of the most fearsome beings in the entire galaxy.
The prequel movies showed just how powerful Anakin Skywalker was with the Force before his transformation into Darth Vader. The Clone Wars TV series expanded on this, portraying him as a major hero during that conflict. It’s interesting to consider how much more destruction Anakin could have caused if he hadn’t been injured on Mustafar.
Despite his immense power, several characters within the main Star Wars storyline (not including the Legends tales) have either demonstrably defeated Darth Vader, or possess enough established abilities to confidently do so. Among this small group, five individuals are particularly noteworthy.
5. Darth Plagueis
Darth Plagueis, first introduced in Revenge of the Sith, is a major Star Wars character despite limited screen time. He recently made a brief, shadowy appearance in the finale of The Acolyte. Plans for season 2 of the show would have expanded his role, but the series was canceled by Disney.
Despite only appearing briefly in Star Wars lore, enough is known about Darth Plagueis to establish him as an incredibly powerful Sith Lord. Palpatine’s revelation to Anakin at the end of the Clone Wars – that Plagueis could use the Force to defy death and even create life – is a prime example. This ability, unknown to the Jedi, immediately places Plagueis far above Darth Vader in terms of raw Force power.
Okay, so the story of Plagueis’s demise is pretty simple – Palpatine, his own student, just…killed him while he was sleeping. It’s a real ‘pride comes before a fall’ situation. If Plagueis hadn’t gotten so comfortable with his power and let his defenses drop, he would have essentially been immortal and absolutely crushed Vader in a fight. Look, even if you believe Vader was a better sword fighter, Plagueis’s control of the Force was on another level – he would have completely overpowered him. It wouldn’t have even been close.
4. Yoda
Despite being major characters in the Star Wars universe, Yoda and Anakin Skywalker never fought each other with lightsabers. However, Yoda was an incredibly powerful Jedi Master, and likely could have defeated Anakin, whom he once questioned allowing into the Jedi Order due to his age.
By the time of The Phantom Menace, Yoda had lived for over 800 years. Even considering the slow maturation of his species – as seen with Grogu in The Mandalorian – that meant he had centuries more training and experience than Anakin and nearly all other Jedi. Yoda clearly embodied the idea that consistent practice leads to mastery.
In Attack of the Clones, Yoda soundly defeated his old apprentice, Count Dooku, who only managed to escape by trying to kill Anakin and Obi-Wan as a diversion. Later, in Revenge of the Sith, Yoda fought Palpatine to a standstill, ultimately being forced to retreat. If Yoda had gone to Mustafar instead of Obi-Wan, he likely would have defeated Anakin and ended his threat for good.
3. Obi-Wan Kenobi
Even though Obi-Wan Kenobi was a strong Jedi during the final days of the Old Republic, Anakin Skywalker was naturally more gifted with the Force. However, Obi-Wan repeatedly defeated Anakin – even after Anakin became his enemy – by using his intelligence and deep understanding of Anakin’s fighting techniques, gained from years of training and fighting alongside him.
Anakin tended to be overconfident and act on his feelings, while Obi-Wan was more calm and focused on strategy during fights. A good example is Obi-Wan gaining the high ground on Mustafar to win their first duel, and also their training fight shown in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series before the events of Attack of the Clones.
In their first fight on the TV series, Darth Vader defeated Obi-Wan, but Obi-Wan was likely caught off guard by the shock of seeing Vader alive. Obi-Wan won their second duel, and if he hadn’t sacrificed himself in A New Hope to allow Luke Skywalker and his friends to escape the Death Star, he probably would have defeated Vader again.
2. Darth Sidious
In Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine (also known as Darth Sidious) predicted to Yoda that his apprentice, Darth Vader, would eventually surpass them both in power. However, Anakin Skywalker suffered severe injuries – losing three limbs and being badly burned – during their duel on Mustafar. Because of this, Sidious ultimately remained the more powerful of the two.
Whenever we see Sidious fight in Star Wars, he’s incredibly powerful. He easily defeated Maul and Savage Oppress in The Clone Wars, and in Revenge of the Sith, he swiftly killed Saesee Tiin, Agen Kolar, and Kit Fisto before facing Mace Windu. What’s even more telling is that he’s also shown dominating Darth Vader, even inflicting pain on him, to demonstrate his superiority.
Vader’s robotic suit made him especially vulnerable to Emperor Palpatine’s Force lightning. He only managed to defeat Palpatine by throwing him into the reactor shaft because the Emperor didn’t anticipate his apprentice’s betrayal, a move that ultimately killed Vader. If Palpatine had been prepared, Vader would have been the one destroyed.
1. Luke Skywalker
Luke Skywalker began his Jedi training even later in life than his father, Anakin, and he certainly made errors along the way. Despite this, he actually progressed more quickly than Anakin did. By the end of the original Star Wars trilogy, Luke had defeated Darth Vader and officially become a Jedi.
Luke Skywalker’s abilities grew thanks to training from Obi-Wan and Yoda, the challenges he faced between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and even a moment where he gave in to anger on the second Death Star. This growth continued, as demonstrated by his defeat of the Dark Troopers in the season 2 finale of The Mandalorian, and ultimately by his ability to project himself across vast distances to Crait just before his death in The Last Jedi.
The Luke Skywalker who tried to rebuild the Jedi Order and taught Rey would have easily defeated Darth Vader, even more so than when Luke was younger. But as Luke showed when he faced Kylo Ren, Star Wars battles aren’t always about physical power. Clever thinking can be just as effective, so a fight between older Luke and Vader might not have been a simple lightsaber duel—it could have played out in a completely different way.
