Sebastian Stan‘s new drama movie is already a critical powerhouse.
The actor’s new film is already getting excellent reviews, with a high score on Rotten Tomatoes after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. He’s been in several successful movies recently, earning him numerous awards and nominations. In 2025 alone, he received two Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor, winning for his performance in the musical/comedy A Different Man and also being nominated for his dramatic role in The Apprentice. He’s also set to appear as Harvey Dent in the next Batman: Part II movie.
His newest film is just as powerful, with Stan playing the lead role in Romanian director Cristian Mungiu’s latest drama, Fjord. He stars as Mihai Gheorghiu, a Romanian father whose family moves to a village in Norway – the birthplace of his wife, Lisbet (played by Renate Reinsve). They quickly become friends with the local Halberg family, but their lives are thrown into turmoil when accusations of child abuse surface, leading to a series of chaotic events.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie Fjord was a hit with critics at the Cannes Film Festival, earning a high score on the site. Currently, it has a 91% critics’ score based on 11 reviews. This success continues a trend for both actor Stan, who consistently appears in critically acclaimed films, and director Mungiu, whose movies are consistently well-received. While the film is off to a great start, a U.S. release date hasn’t been announced yet.
Critics say the movie Fjord skillfully captures the unsettling nature of its story, which unfolds slowly but keeps you engaged. It explores cultural differences in a way that makes viewers confront difficult themes. Importantly, the film doesn’t simply demonize the Gheorghiu family; it presents their beliefs neutrally, allowing the audience to form their own opinions. This approach creates a deeply personal experience that many critics find particularly praiseworthy.
This new film is receiving a lot of positive attention from critics, highlighting how much Stan’s career has developed recently. Although he’ll continue playing Bucky Barnes in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday in 2026, he’s also taking on roles, like the one in Fjord, that allow for more realistic stories with meaningful themes. The film is a major success at the Cannes Film Festival, and many critics believe it’s a strong awards contender.
With all the positive attention Fjord is receiving, it looks like another big win for Sebastian Stan. Critics are especially impressed with his performance as Mihai, suggesting the film is powerfully moving thanks to him. When the movie is released to more theaters, a larger audience will be able to experience its thought-provoking and challenging story.
