Johnny Somali reports that he’s receiving celebrity-like attention in a Korean prison after asking a fan for books and media coverage.
On April 14th, Johnny Somali, also known as Ramsey Khalid Ismael, received a sentence of six months and 20 days in prison in South Korea. He was convicted of several offenses, including creating and sharing manipulated videos – known as deepfakes – of other streamers. Prosecutors had originally requested a three-year prison sentence with forced labor.
Since receiving his sentence, Somali has challenged the length of his prison term, potentially facing a longer sentence than the initial six months. He’s also reached out to fans, claiming he’s enjoying his time in prison, and has begun making requests while incarcerated.
The streamer now claims a fan is giving him special treatment in prison, making him feel like a celebrity among the other inmates and guards.
Johnny Somali asks for screenshots of coverage for his prison sentence
On May 18th, Legal Mindset shared a recent letter from Somali, where he requested a fan send him a copy of Game of Thrones and screenshots showing social media posts about his time in jail.
He says he’s become something of a celebrity inside the prison, receiving special treatment from other inmates. Many greet him, shake his hand, and often call out ‘Somali!’ from their cells or across the prison yard. He even claims he’s been asked for and given autographs.
He said he’s currently sharing a cell with other international prisoners, but he could request a private cell if he preferred. He also mentioned the living conditions aren’t too bad.
Somali previously described the detention centre as being like a hotel, but noted that residents had no access to social media.
The facility has been called unbearable, like “hell,” due to overcrowding and the absence of air conditioning.
According to Legal Mindset, his lawyer has dropped his case, and he will now be represented by a public defender. This comes after a second person filed a request for a harsh sentence against him.
