Before the first season of HBO’s Harry Potter series even premieres, a main actor playing a Hogwarts student will be replaced for the second season.
HBO’s new series is a major undertaking, bringing J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books to television in a completely new way. While the movies told the entire story in eight films, this show will dedicate a full season to each book, allowing for a more detailed and expansive adaptation.
The new series will show much more of life at Hogwarts, focusing on the students, teachers, and other characters. However, Ginny Weasley will be replaced with a new actress before the show returns for its second season.
HBO’s Harry Potter show is recasting Ginny Weasley
Gracie Cochrane, who played Ginny Weasley in the first season of HBO’s Harry Potter series, will not be returning for future seasons, according to Deadline.

The actor’s family announced that Gracie will be leaving her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO Harry Potter series after the first season. They cited unforeseen circumstances as the reason for her difficult decision. Gracie has greatly enjoyed her time working on the show and is thankful for the opportunity and the support of Lucy Bevan and the entire production team.
I was really sad to hear Gracie Cochrane won’t be back for season two of the Harry Potter series on HBO, but I totally respect her and her family’s decision. HBO put out a statement saying they support them, and they’re thankful for everything Gracie brought to the first season – and honestly, me too! She was great.
Ginny Weasley is a key character in the Harry Potter series, ultimately becoming Harry’s wife. Her role becomes increasingly important as the story progresses. As of now, HBO hasn’t announced who will play Ginny in Season 2, following the departure of the original actress.
