This island has free accomodation if you look after their cats and cuddle them

A Greek island is gaining popularity online because it offers free housing to people who agree to care for the cats at a local animal sanctuary.

Many places around the world are offering financial incentives to attract new residents and encourage families to grow. For instance, Japan is giving money to single people who use dating apps, and in Korea, the gaming company Krafton has offered its employees around $67,000 to have children.

If a fast-paced life isn’t for you, and you’d rather dedicate your time to a pet, then I’ve heard Syros in Greece could be the perfect place. It just seems like a really lovely spot for animal lovers!

This Greek island has several cat sanctuaries that care for its many stray cats, and they often rely on volunteers to help with their care.

Syros cat sanctuary will give you free accommodation

If you choose to volunteer, you’ll work five days a week, from 8 am to 1 pm. Your duties will include caring for the cats by feeding them, cleaning their living spaces, and, of course, giving them lots of cuddles!

We’re looking for volunteers who can commit to at least one month of work. In exchange, we’ll provide free housing, breakfast, and cover all utility costs on a beautiful Cycladic island. Otherwise, you’ll be responsible for your own travel expenses and lunch/dinner.

Unfortunately, spaces on Syros are full for the 2026 season. You can try to join the 2027 team starting in September.

Richard Bowell, who co-founded God’s Little People Cat Rescue, explained to Greek Reporter that they aim to demonstrate the importance of animals. He believes how we treat animals is a reflection of our own character and compassion.

Syros isn’t alone in trying to attract new residents. The tiny island of Antikythera, with a population of just 24, has been offering free houses and monthly payments to families who decide to move there for some time now.

There’s just one problem: this opportunity also requires you to have a physically demanding job and bring your three children along. The plan includes reopening the school on the island.
