CBS is hinting at the conclusion of the Yellowstone universe with Marshals, a new show where Kayce Dutton (played by Luke Grimes) contemplates selling the iconic Dutton Ranch. The original Yellowstone, which starred Kevin Costner as John Dutton, finished its run in 2024. The series ended with Kayce selling the ranch, but retaining a section known as East Camp.
Kayce and his son, Tate, currently live in East Camp as part of the show Marshals. He originally intended to build a life there with his wife, Monica Long-Dutton, but she sadly passed away from cancer. Although Marshals hasn’t received the same critical praise as the original Yellowstone, it’s proven to be very popular with viewers, attracting 26.5 million in its first 28 days.
Kayce Considers Selling The Yellowstone Ranch In Marshals
In the next-to-last episode of Marshals Season 1, Kayce arranges a meeting with Tom Weaver, the owner of Weaver Ranch, right before a major new business deal. He remembers meeting Thomas Rainwater there previously, as shown in Yellowstone’s final episode, where they discussed Kayce selling almost all of the
The season finale of Yellowstone saw Kayce sell his family’s land to the Broken Rock Tribe, leaving the fate of the remaining land he kept uncertain. He later remembered, during a conversation with Tom, how John Dutton’s dedication to the Yellowstone Ranch had cost his own father his way of life.
Kayce is starting to question his choices, admitting he doesn’t want to repeat his father’s mistakes. He’s come to understand that East Camp, intended as a safe place, ultimately led to tragedy. Tate also points out that while he likes East Camp, it’s where his mother, Monica, became ill and passed away, and he truly feels at home with Kayce.
Kayce was initially upset by Tom’s offer to buy East Camp, but he now seems more open to it. The episode ends with Kayce asking Tom to explain the details of the deal, hinting that East Camp might be sold before the end of Season 1 of Marshals.
Tom talks to Kayce and advises him that he can’t truly move forward until he lets go of his burdens. Meanwhile, Weaver suggests to Dutton that selling the ranch isn’t necessary, even at a low price like those seen on Yellowstone. However, if East Camp is sold, it will signal a definitive end for Kayce’s current path.
What Kayce Selling East Camp Means For Yellowstone
If Kayce sells East Camp and distances himself from the family’s land in Paradise Valley, it would mean the Yellowstone story would no longer be connected to the property that has been central to Taylor Sheridan’s narrative. The Dutton family first settled their Montana ranch, as shown in 1883, in the 1800s and have lived there for more than 140 years.
With Beth and Rip now settled in Texas, Kayce’s East Camp represents the Dutton family’s final connection to their history. Kayce selling this last piece of the Yellowstone Ranch isn’t just a property sale; it would signal the end of the Duttons’ long and iconic presence in Paradise Valley.
Dolly gently reminds Kayce about a previous agreement with East Camp, but acknowledges that circumstances have shifted and encourages him to make his own decisions. Kayce replies that he’s lost the one thing he truly wanted—he glances towards ,—and explains that all his actions have been motivated by a feeling of obligation.
As a total fan of this show, I’m on the edge of my seat! It looks like Kayce is really thinking about what comes next for him, and the finale of Marshals is promising some huge shifts in everyone’s lives. We’ve got Andrea wrestling with going back to her job in Washington, Cal dropping the bombshell that he has cancer, and Belle dealing with some serious gambling debts. Plus, Kayce is even considering selling East Camp! CBS is definitely building up to a dramatic conclusion, and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds.
In the show Marshals, Kayce faces a difficult choice he previously made in Yellowstone: whether to keep fighting for his family’s land or walk away from that way of life. Just like Dutton selling the Yellowstone Ranch, Kayce is contemplating a similar move. If Dutton sells East Camp, it will likely confirm Kayce’s decision, but it’s unclear what his next step will be.
