Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 7 nearly had a very different ending

We’re nearing the end of Peacemaker Season 2. Although Episode 7 left Christopher Smith and the 11th Street Kids in a difficult situation, the finale almost had an even more devastating outcome.

Season 2 of Peacemaker has been a real emotional ride. Chris Smith finds out his father and brother are actually alive, but they’re on Earth X – that’s the good news. The bad news? It turns out almost everyone there is a Nazi. It’s a complicated situation.

Things really hit a peak at the end of this episode. I mean, Auggie and Keith finally confronted the 11th Street Kids, and we found out something crazy – our Chris Smith actually killed their Chris Smith! It was a total shock, and explains a lot. Seriously, shocking!

A struggle breaks out, resulting in Keith being severely injured, Auggie appearing close to death, and Peacemaker and his team going back to their world to confront Rick Flag. Originally, however, this scene included another character’s death.

Harcourt kills Keith in early Peacemaker script

On the ‘Peacemaker: The Official Podcast,’ James Gunn discussed the thinking behind that particular scene, and what led Harcourt to think about killing Keith. He explained the psychology of the moment and her considerations.

“After everybody runs out, Harcourt asks for Vigilante’s gun,” explains Gunn. “And not really asks. And she’s just going to f**king execute Keith there on the floor because she sees that there’s a pretty good chance that Keith will come after Peacemaker… she’s protecting Chris. And it’s this emotional moment because we’ve seen now that she has some amount of love for him.”

Jennifer Holland – who plays Harcourt – explains: “I see this scene as Harcourt choosing to give up any chance of a relationship with him to protect him, because she understands the situation. She’s thinking, ‘If I do this, he’ll never be able to forgive me, and I know that’s true.’”

Harcourt doesn’t end up shooting Keith, but Gunn shares that “in the first version of the story, she did kill him.”

How Season 2 sets up supervillain

During the same podcast interview, Steve Agee – the actor who portrays Economos – suggested that keeping Keith alive could introduce a “potential new antagonist.” James Gunn agreed, explaining: “The entire season, in a sense, is the beginning of Captain Triumph’s journey to becoming a supervillain; a truly awful, white supremacist supervillain. And you can see it in his expression at the end – we see that look, and we think, ‘Oh.’”

Agee draws a parallel to Chris Smith’s backstory, noting, “It’s also not dissimilar to Peacemaker’s origin story, where it’s as if his brother and father are both killed. It feels like a repeating pattern.”

Gunn also points out, “It’s a strange situation to have as an ongoing conflict… your brother from a different dimension resents you because of your own death.”

Currently, we haven’t received any confirmation about a potential Peacemaker Season 3. However, if the show *does* get renewed, it’s highly probable that Chris and Keith will have a major confrontation at some point.
