The highly anticipated samurai fantasy sequel, Ghost of Yotei, from developer Sucker Punch Productions has launched on PlayStation 5 and is receiving positive feedback from reviewers. This suggests we might see more games in the Ghost franchise down the line. However, Sucker Punch Productions recently stated in an interview that timing will be a crucial factor in deciding whether to create another installment.
In a conversation with VGC on October 2nd, co-founder Brian Fleming mentioned that a future game in the Ghost series or a revival of Sly Cooper are both possibilities. However, since the team can only create a new game “about every five years,” any new project needs to be “the best idea” they can come up with.
Fleming explained that their next move – whether to continue with Ghost or return to Sly – is largely determined by how much they value staying focused and having time to refine their work. This means they can realistically only work on one project at a time. “If we could handle four projects simultaneously, we’d have a remaster, and another one, and fulfill some fan requests – things that would be really well-received,” he said. “But we’re limited to just one. So, it needs to be the strongest idea, doesn’t it? And that really helps us narrow things down. It’s not that we lack good ideas – there are plenty. But we only get to pursue one, and we only get that opportunity roughly every five years. So, this choice is incredibly important. It’s like choosing your college and major all over again every five years… a huge decision, so we need to think it through carefully.”
Man, it feels like forever since we’ve seen anything new with Sly Cooper! The last big game, Thieves in Time, came out way back in 2013. I heard they were trying to make a funny heist movie and even an animated TV show, but it looks like those projects are totally stuck in development hell. It’s a shame, really – I’m still hoping we get another game someday!
Ghost of Yotei was recently released, so the development team is currently focused on that game. Similar to Tsushima, Yotei will likely receive a downloadable content (DLC) expansion later on, and the free multiplayer Legends mode is expected in 2026.
TopMob highly praised Ghost of Yotei, giving the open-world samurai action game a 9/10 in our Ghost of Yotei review. Writer Richard Wakeling explained, “While it feels familiar as a sequel, every change enhances Atsu and her unique qualities, resulting in a game that feels fresh even with recognizable gameplay.” That certainly sounds appealing.
