Future of Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry and Rainbow Six depends on them. Ubisoft has finally revealed its cards

Ubisoft has revealed the formation of Vantage Studios, a new studio created in partnership with Tencent, the major Chinese company. Reports from a few months back indicate that this studio will focus on developing and growing Ubisoft’s most popular franchises, including Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six.

So, Ubisoft is building this new studio – they’re calling it a “creative house” – and it’s pretty massive. It’s basically bringing together all their teams from a bunch of different places: Montreal, Quebec, Sherbrooke, Saguenay, Sofia, and Barcelona. That’s around 2,300 developers in total, which is huge! I’m really curious to see what kind of games they’ll be making with so many talented people.

Christophe Derennes and Charlie Guillemot lead the subsidiary, with Charlie being the son of Ubisoft’s CEO, Yves Guillemot. Recognizing that some might see this as favoritism, Charlie Guillemot has emphasized his commitment to focusing on his work and developing fresh content for gamers.

Vantage Studios will be responsible for developing and growing these brands. They’ll leverage Ubisoft’s existing knowledge and skills, and share resources, but also empower developers with greater creative control over their games, according to Charlie Guillemot.

New structure – more freedom for devs

As a big fan of Ubisoft games, I’m really excited to hear about how they’re setting up Vantage Studios. From what I understand, they’re going for a much more relaxed and independent approach compared to the main company. It sounds like each team will have a lot more say in how their projects are made, which should mean they can react quickly to what’s happening in the gaming world and, most importantly, to what we players want. That’s a huge plus in my book!

The company also points out that establishing Vantage Studios is only the beginning of Ubisoft’s overall change. They plan to develop additional groups like this one in the future, combining various brands and studios into a single organization.

Concerning Tencent, the Chinese group that invested €1.16 billion for a 25% share in the new company, they will offer guidance, but Ubisoft will retain full control over all creative and business choices.

It’s important to understand that the creation of Vantage Studios happened after a difficult time for the French company. Over the past few years, Ubisoft has faced financial difficulties, reduced its workforce with layoffs, and even cancelled certain projects. Reports indicate that the company explored several possibilities, such as selling portions of its business to other companies, before finally reaching a deal with Tencent. This move signals a strategic shift for the publisher.

Currently, it’s uncertain how other parts of Ubisoft, such as Massive Entertainment, will be integrated into the new structure. We know Ubisoft has around 20,000 employees globally, and this change will affect most of them. This significant transformation will likely have a broad impact across the company.
