Family sells home and moves into RV to live at Disney World for most of the year

A family of four shared how much it costs to live at Disney World in Florida for more than two-thirds of the year.

Lauren and Adam Ewing, along with their two children, used to live in a large 10,000-square-foot house near Athens, Georgia. After experiencing some major life changes in 2020, they decided to sell everything and travel the country together in an RV.

They enjoy traveling, with summer vacations in Vermont and ski trips to Canada. But their favorite place to return to is Disney’s Fort Wilderness in Florida, where they spent their honeymoon and now consider their “home base.”

Lauren says they spend 60 to 70% of their year living there

My family and I are Disney fanatics and we try to camp at Fort Wilderness whenever possible. There’s just one weird rule though – they make you leave the campground for a full 24 hours after every 26 days you stay. It sounds annoying, but honestly, it’s just become part of our Disney trips now. We plan around it!

The family has annual passes to Walt Disney World, allowing them to visit the parks throughout the year. But Lauren explains that their life isn’t always filled with Disney fun. She says most of their time is spent on everyday things like exercising, schoolwork, and jobs. They usually visit the parks in the evenings.

Staying at the campsite can become expensive quickly. Campsite fees change depending on the time of year, with the couple recently paying around $300 per night during spring break – totaling $8,000 for their 26-day stay. That’s in addition to the cost of food purchased at the resort.

Honestly, money isn’t the biggest thing for my family right now. My husband, Adam, puts it perfectly: he doesn’t want to be older and regret not taking these trips with the kids while they’re young. He says he wants to make those memories now, when we can all enjoy them together. It’s about experiences, not things, and we’re really focused on that.
