Kill Bill wasn’t initially planned as a two-part film. Quentin Tarantino first envisioned it as a single, three-hour movie, a complete cinematic experience to be watched all at once. While the movie naturally divides into two volumes – Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 – each with its own unique feel, the complete vision Tarantino had for audiences hasn’t been shown in theaters… until now. That’s been disappointing for years, but it’s finally happening later this year.
For years, fans have been eagerly awaiting a release of what’s known as Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair, and now the wait is finally over. Lionsgate has announced that the complete version of this kung-fu classic will be shown in theaters for the very first time on December 5… but there’s more! This version also includes a seven-and-a-half minute animated scene that has never been seen before.
Although Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair is occasionally screened at Quentin Tarantino’s Los Angeles theaters – the New Beverly Cinema and The Vista – it hasn’t had a standard release in the United States, even on home video (I’m really hoping this announcement means a 4K UHD/Blu-ray version is coming!). The press release doesn’t specify exactly how many theaters will show it, but it states it will be available in major cities, with screenings in both 35mm and 70mm formats.
I saw Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair a few years back, and I can share that it includes some really interesting differences from the original. Most notably, the fight scene with the Crazy 88 isn’t shown in black and white-you see all the action in full color. Also, the movie removes the cliffhanger ending from Vol. 1 and the recap sequence from Vol. 2. This means the audience learns about Uma Thurman’s character’s daughter being alive at the same moment the character does.
It’s still unknown precisely how this new anime sequel will connect to the existing storyline, but I’m extremely excited to see what happens. I’m really looking forward to finding out!
We at TopMob will be closely following this event over the next few months (particularly as we eagerly await news about Quentin Tarantino’s tenth and final movie). I strongly suggest you add it to your 2025 movie plans-the film is fantastic and you won’t want to miss it. Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2 are both great, but Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair is a truly unique viewing experience that you absolutely need to see.
