The 1980s saw a surge in popular fantasy films, including titles like Conan the Barbarian, Excalibur, and Dragonslayer, which revitalized the genre. Now, one of those classic movies, The Sword and the Sorcerer, is being re-released as an Amazon-exclusive 4K steelbook Blu-ray. Preorder it now, and it should begin shipping on December 2.
If you’re not familiar with it, The Sword and the Sorcerer is probably the most perfectly named sword-and-sorcery fantasy film ever made. It centers around Talon, a famous mercenary who fights with a unique three-bladed sword. Talon discovers he’s the rightful heir to a kingdom controlled by a wicked sorcerer, and so he embarks on a quest to take back what’s his, rescue a lovely princess, and fight fearsome monsters-basically, everything you’d anticipate in a sword-and-sorcery cult classic. Although The Sword and the Sorcerer received negative reviews from critics, it was a financial success when it came out, and it’s considered a key film in the development of the swords-and-sorcery genre, which would later become very popular with audiences.
Shout Factory, the company releasing the new 4K Steelbook Edition, has revealed more 4K Blu-rays coming out in December. Each release includes a steelbook case with unique new artwork, plus a bonus disc filled with special features. A highlight is director Zack Snyder’s 2004 reimagining of George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, which is getting a new 4K Steelbook Edition featuring spooky cover art. Shout Factory is also bringing back the third film in the sci-fi series Riddick, starring Vin Diesel as the iconic anti-hero, as he continues his journey to fulfill his fate.
