About Last Night (2014)

The 2014 film About Last Night is a remake of a movie with the same title released in 1986, which featured Rob Lowe and Demi Moore. Both films are adapted from the 1974 play Sexual Perversity in Chicago. This recent version also brings together actors who previously appeared in another popular romantic comedy from the 2010s.

Regina Hall and Kevin Hart star as Joan and Bernie, a couple who try to set up their friends, Debbie and Danny. The movie is a lighthearted comedy that explores how their relationships hold up when faced with real-life challenges, and the actors’ chemistry makes it really enjoyable.

Deliver Us From Eva (2003)

Even though critics weren’t fans, many people find Deliver Us From Eva really fun. The movie is a humorous spin on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, centering around three men who hire a woman to date their overbearing sister-in-law, who tends to boss her siblings around.

LL Cool J and Gabrielle Union have great on-screen chemistry, and their connection feels genuine even though the circumstances that bring them together are a bit shady. The movie also features a talented supporting cast including Meagan Good, Duane Martin, and Essence Atkins – a common trait among popular Black romantic comedies.

Brown Sugar (2002)

Rick Famuyiwa is currently well-known for directing episodes of The Mandalorian, but many people overlook his earlier films. One standout is Brown Sugar, a romantic comedy about two friends whose connection goes all the way back to discovering hip-hop together in New York City.

Now established musicians, Sanaa Lathan and Taye Diggs create music together and share a romantic connection. The film Brown Sugar received positive reviews, largely due to Lathan and Diggs’ engaging performances, with strong support from Mos Def and Queen Latifah.

Hitch (2004)

“Hitch” was a major success for Black romantic comedies, largely thanks to Will Smith’s star power. He consistently draws crowds to the cinema, and with Eva Mendes and Kevin James also starring, it was a film many people wanted to see.

The movie centers around Hitch, played by Smith, who expertly guides others through the dating world, but struggles with his own love life. This changes when he meets Sara (Mendes) while assisting his client Albert (James) in pursuing the famous Allegra (Amber Valletta). Expect plenty of humor and a valuable lesson learned by Hitch as the story unfolds.

Think Like A Man (2012)

This movie is inspired by Steve Harvey’s book, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man. It follows several couples where the women try to understand and influence their partners using the book’s advice. However, the men eventually figure out what the women are up to and start using the book’s strategies themselves, shifting the power dynamic.

Despite a crowded field of romantic comedies, Think Like a Man stands out thanks to its talented cast – including Regina Hall, Taraji P. Henson, Kevin Hart, and Gabrielle Union, among others. It also features a fantastic soundtrack and was popular enough to get a sequel.

Just Wright (2010)

One of the enjoyable things about Just Wright is that it successfully combines the genres of romantic comedy and sports film. The story focuses on the growing connection between a physical therapist and the NBA player she treats.

Queen Latifah is wonderful as the main character, and Common delivers a surprisingly strong performance as her love interest. Together, they make Just Wright a genuinely sweet and funny romantic comedy that’s much better than many critics suggest – it even won an NAACP Image Award for its script.

The Incredible Jessica James (2017)

Okay, seriously, Jessica Williams is becoming one of my favorite actors. I’ve been consistently blown away by her performances. Whether she’s bringing the funny and heart to Shrinking on Apple TV+, navigating the ups and downs of love in HBO’s Love Life, or lending her voice to the cool animation Entergalactic with Kid Cudi on Netflix, she just kills it every time.

Many consider The Incredible Jessica James to be her best work. This Netflix film stars Williams as Jessica, a playwright navigating life after a breakup and trying to achieve her professional goals. She unexpectedly finds love with a divorced man along the way.

The Best Man (1999)

Okay, so let me tell you, it’s not every day you see a Black rom-com turn into a whole series, but The Best Man absolutely deserves it. The movie centers around a group of college buddies reuniting for a wedding, and things get complicated fast when it’s revealed the best man has written a tell-all novel… one that’s pretty clearly based on their lives. It’s a recipe for hilarious drama and a lot of awkward moments, and honestly, it totally works.

The film The Best Man was well-received by critics and gained a larger following over time, boosted by the rising success of its stars like Regina Hall, Terrence Howard, and Nia Long. Its popularity continued with a sequel released in 2013 and a miniseries in 2022, proving how enduring the story is.

Coming To America (1988)

Few comedy films are as well-known and beloved as Coming to America. Released in 1988, the movie tells the story of Akeem, a prince from the made-up African country of Zamunda, who goes to Queens, New York, in search of true love.

Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall are both hilarious in this movie, which was a huge success when it came out and is still referenced today. The love story is sweet, though the 2021 sequel wasn’t well-received.

Rye Lane (2023)

Richard Linklater’s Before films are considered some of the greatest romantic movies ever made. Rye Lane offers a similar feel, but with a lighter, comedic touch. The film follows Yas (Vivian Oparah) and Dom (David Jonsson) as they unexpectedly meet and spend a day getting to know each other.

It’s incredibly enjoyable to watch these characters connect, support each other, and fall in love. While the story is straightforward, it’s remarkably effective thanks to the witty writing and the fantastic chemistry between the actors, Jonsson and Oparah, resulting in one of the best romantic comedies of recent years.
