I just read about this amazing restaurant in China! They’re using AI to figure out what food I’d like best – it scans your tongue and face! And get this, robots actually cook the food! It’s like something out of a sci-fi movie, but it’s real!
Artificial intelligence is starting to significantly impact the food industry. Many restaurants are now using AI to plan their daily menus, and some are even experimenting with robotic chefs. Interestingly, a few of these robot-run restaurants have had to shut down, not because of the technology itself, but because they struggled to find people to handle the necessary physical tasks alongside the robots.
AI is popping up at fast food drive-thrus to try and make ordering faster, though the results are mixed. For example, some McDonald’s locations in China are now using robots to greet customers and take orders. It looks like AI in this industry is here to stay.
Interestingly, some Chinese restaurants are now using AI to analyze customers’ tongues and faces to suggest personalized food recommendations. It’s true!
Chinese restaurant has AI to recommend meals
According to the South China Morning Post, the 24 Jieqi Robot Restaurant in Hangzhou uses robots to take orders, serve food, clean tables, and even cook meals.
Before a customer can place an order, the AI first gets to know them. It does this by looking at their face and tongue, and by having them fill out a short questionnaire.
The AI will then offer meal suggestions, and might even point out healthier choices than you were originally considering. Ultimately, you get to choose what you want – the AI simply offers recommendations.

As we’ve seen, artificial intelligence is already being used to improve menus and dining experiences in restaurants around the world.
In July 2025, the highly-rated Dubai restaurant, WOOHOO, brought on Chef Aiman as its head. While Chef Aiman oversees operations, the actual cooking is done by the human staff. Interestingly, WOOHOO also produces its own podcast and maintains a presence on social media.
China is also a leader in artificial intelligence, even creating toys designed to help people navigate social interactions by speaking for them.
