Rumors are circulating online about the potential release of George R.R. Martin’s The Winds of Winter, and fans are understandably thrilled. However, it’s unlikely an official release date will be announced in the near future.
A post claiming George R.R. Martin had finished The Winds of Winter and that it would be released in Fall 2026 went viral on X, reaching almost three million users. The post featured a screenshot from an online forum, supposedly from a Bantam Books employee. However, the publisher has since confirmed that this information is false, disappointing fans eager for the next book in the series.
Don’t Believe The Winds of Winter Rumors
A representative from Bantam Books has confirmed that rumors of a leak circulating online are untrue, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Fans are likely facing an endless wait for The Winds of Winter, with many now believing the book will never be published. It’s been 15 years since the last book in the series came out. The series began 30 years ago in 1996 with A Game of Thrones, followed by A Clash of Kings (1999), A Storm of Swords (2000), A Feast for Crows (2006), and A Dance With Dragons (2011).
George R.R. Martin says he wants to return to his Dunk and Egg stories and also plans to write another book in the Fire and Blood series. He mentioned in January that he believes he could finish The Winds of Winter relatively quickly if he could just clear his schedule. While it’s been made clear that Winds is his top priority, he admits he doesn’t always feel motivated to work on it, as he’s fallen behind on several projects.
Will The Winds of Winter Ever Be Released?
HBO’s Game of Thrones television series premiered in 2011, coinciding with the release of the final published book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series. The show ran for eight seasons, ending in 2019, but its final season received a lot of criticism from viewers. This made fans even more eager for George R.R. Martin to finish the book series, hoping for a more fulfilling ending. However, six years later, The Winds of Winter still hasn’t been released, and there’s no sign it will be anytime soon.
Martin has said he plans to write at least two more books in the series after The Winds of Winter, including one called A Dream of Spring. However, it’s currently unclear if either of these books will ever be published.
The franchise continues to grow with new TV series. HBO has ordered two more seasons of the prequel, House of the Dragon. Another series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg stories, is also getting a second season, which was announced earlier this year.
