Have you ever run into an ex and immediately felt relieved you’re no longer together? That’s exactly how I feel about Greg right now. By the end of this, I really hope he feels the same way.
Elizabeth Stoddard is a larger-than-life character, but surprisingly, we don’t learn much about her. The show initially tries to define her as a powerful businesswoman – Walt even calls her a “She-E-O” – but quickly walks back the joke. While her introduction, and the arrival of Connie Britton, is exciting, the character feels more like a stereotype. She visits Ludlow solely for the dedication of a building named after her – completely unconcerned with her daughter’s problems – and constantly projects an image of being incredibly busy, seemingly never prioritizing her family. It’s off-putting. The only thing that makes Beth somewhat likable is Connie Britton’s naturally warm and subtle performance.
Beth has a knack for turning every situation into being about her. When Greg’s phone rang during her long-winded speech at the center’s dedication, she publicly called it out instead of letting it go. And later, when a student recognized Greg and greeted him enthusiastically, Beth quickly changed the subject, asking if anyone in Greg’s family had ever gotten into trouble in the college fountain. It was an odd question, considering her family members are adults, not college students.
Beth gets visibly annoyed when Dylan and Greg bond over the cheese and nuts, and immediately points out that she knows Greg better. Dylan isn’t exactly innocent either, subtly trying to claim Greg’s attention with jokes and a touch on his arm – something to watch. But Beth really seems to need to be the center of attention. It’s a pattern we’ve seen before – doesn’t this remind anyone of Archie? Katie definitely married someone who reminds her of her emotionally distant mother, and honestly, we often repeat patterns with partners that stem from our childhood relationships. It’s just how it is!
Archie consistently steers every conversation back to himself, which is frustrating. It’s a shame he and Beth didn’t connect when she visited, as they likely would have just gotten lost in their own self-centeredness. When Sunny returned from looking for internships, Archie didn’t even ask how it went – he immediately started talking about his book. Even Walt was surprised when he inquired about Sunny’s interviews and Archie didn’t respond directly, simply saying she was lucky. Archie didn’t even notice Walt’s sarcasm. He also seems oblivious to Walt’s curiosity about his newfound fitness, leading to a funny exchange about carbohydrates where Archie enthusiastically lists his favorite foods. While his charming pronunciation of ‘pasta’ almost made up for it, Archie’s continued praise of starchy treats triggered Walt, who angrily kicked him out. Honestly, Archie could use a piece of bread – Oprah loves it too, and it’s okay to enjoy sometimes.
Walt is focused on staying in shape, but he’s also worried Beth is trying to take his job. She subtly undermines him with comments about women leaders and hints she’d be better at his role. However, it’s confusing what her actual job is – being a “CEO” seems vague, and it’s unclear how she’d balance that with being college president. If Beth returns to Ludlow, we really need to understand what she does for work. More importantly, replacing Walt with Beth would likely make the show much less funny. John C. McGinley consistently gets at least three laughs every episode, and that’s something we can’t afford to lose.
A perfect example of the show’s brilliance is a scene where Greg goes with Beth to Walt’s office. Both Beth and Dylan playfully call him out for pretending to be a hockey fan. When Greg admits he’s a bit of an introvert and tends to fib, Walt quickly enlists his help with a difficult coach, then dramatically announces he’s going to lunch – at 10:30 AM! Greg points this out, and Walt, without missing a beat, calmly raises his eyebrows and says, “Betrayal makes me hungry, Greg.” The delivery of lines on this show is phenomenal. If HBO is thinking about another season, the acting alone is reason enough to make it happen.
When an ex returns, things quickly become complicated. Greg and Beth have a heated argument about their past, revealing that Beth cheated on him with his close friend – a betrayal that clearly stung deeply. Beth defends her actions by saying she has a full life and couldn’t fulfill all of Greg’s needs. I can see both of their perspectives, but I’m ultimately rooting for Greg. He was the one who was hurt, and he’s just a more likable character. Is that biased? Perhaps, but as the show’s main character, he naturally draws my sympathy.
Katie is dealing with a cheating husband, but she’s handling it differently than Greg. She’s also hiding it from her father. Despite continuing her affair with Archie, she surprisingly shows compassion when Sunny tries to apologize, even checking in on her later. This feels like a typical, unrealistic moment you’d see in a show by Bill Lawrence (similar to the dynamics between Louis and other characters in the show Shrinking). It does, however, establish a connection between Sunny and Katie, both of whom are understandably hurt by Archie’s selfish behavior and emotional manipulation. Honestly, Archie is awful.
Katie is deeply ashamed of her continued relationship with Archie, to the point where she can’t even tell her dad about it. It’s also possible she’s hiding it because she knows her dad still loves her mom and doesn’t want to upset him, as she fears she’s repeating the same pattern. A particularly sad moment occurs when Katie playfully mocks a piece of art on the wall, only to discover it’s a photo of her mother. Beth, recognizing herself in the picture, is visibly shaken and quickly leaves, offering a hurried goodbye. This leaves Katie and Greg alone, comfortably joking together – which is all Greg ever desired.
Office Hours
Last week, many of you guessed that Cristle might be Tommy’s mother, and I was leaning towards that theory too. But now, I’m also considering the hockey coach as a possibility. He revealed to Greg a very personal and embarrassing story about his son walking in on him, and admitted his son sees him as a failure. While I still prefer the Cristle theory, the hockey coach reveal could be interesting. It’s also possible the hockey coach and Cristle have a past relationship.
I completely forgot to mention the theme song – my apologies! I’m obsessed with it and can’t stop listening. It’s Michael Stipe’s first new song in three years, and it’s fantastic. A great theme song can really make a show, and “I Played the Fool” absolutely does that.
I didn’t enjoy the storyline where Archie chased after the person vandalizing things with “FOR KATIE,” only to be suddenly confronted by a student. I’m also not a fan of the show repeatedly using the “it was just a misunderstanding” trope to explain away inappropriate situations, though I’m willing to overlook it as long as no one is seriously harmed.
I was completely entertained by Greg and Cristle’s playful romance this week! Cristle is clearly the one in charge, and she’s fantastic at it. The bit with the office copy machine was a brilliantly funny visual, and when she made Greg sign both of his nipples? Pure comedic genius! We need more Mumolo in our lives, always.
• Greg doing “Whazzuuuup” on the phone to Beth had to be a callback to The Office, right?
