Daredevil’s Big MCU Redesign Is A Major Disappointment For One Big Reason

In Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, Daredevil’s suit starts out black, with only red highlights on his mask’s lenses and the classic double-D symbol on his chest. Throughout the season, the black paint will get damaged in fights, revealing the red underneath.

Despite some updates, Daredevil’s suit is very similar to the armored one he wore in Season 1. While the red version looks good, and all his armored suits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe haven’t quite measured up to the simple black cloth suit from the first season of the Netflix show, this series also teased a classic spandex Daredevil costume that never fully materialized.

Daredevil’s MCU Costume Is Great, But It Could Be Greater

Daredevil’s costumes across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, from his appearances on Netflix to Disney+, have been quite varied, but not always impressive. We’ve only gotten glimpses of some, like a series of colored masks, while his yellow and purple suit was fully revealed in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Many fans consider the simple, black cloth costume from the Netflix series to be the best, as later designs – featuring purple and black – looked more like cobbled-together armor than sleek superhero gear.

The first season of Daredevil: Born Again finally showcased a bright red suit, making red its main color. While it’s a fantastic costume – especially the black version with red double-Ds – many of Daredevil’s most iconic comic book outfits are made of more flexible, practical materials like spandex, better suited for street-level crimefighting.

Charlie Cox is in great shape, but his physique is hidden by a bulky, padded suit. We clearly saw his muscles in the previous black spandex outfit. This new costume, while more accurate to the original character design, might require Cox to maintain a very strict fitness regime, which could be demanding.

It’s understandable why Daredevil in the MCU needs extra protection, considering how much damage he’s taken. However, there’s no reason he couldn’t wear a suit made of durable fabric that offers a similar level of defense.

Netflix Gave Daredevil The Perfect Excuse

Even in the early seasons of Netflix’s Daredevil, it was established that Wilson Fisk wore specially tailored suits with hidden, lightweight bulletproof and slash-resistant lining. It’s therefore a letdown that Daredevil’s protective gear appears as simple, padded armor instead of something similarly discreet and advanced.

As a lifelong Daredevil fan, I always pictured a really practical, believable costume – something you could actually see him fighting in, maybe even made of a flexible material like spandex. It would have been amazing if Kingpin’s fancy suits were made of something similar, hinting at their shared world. Thankfully, with the new Daredevil: Born Again series essentially continuing the story from the Netflix show, that possibility hasn’t been totally lost. There’s still a chance they’ll ditch the bulky padding and go for a design closer to the sleek, grounded look from artists like David Mazzucchelli or Marco Checchetto – and honestly, that’s what I’m really hoping for.

Currently, the show Daredevil: Born Again is highlighting Daredevil’s striking black suit. If the buzz is accurate, and the next season draws from the The Devil in Cell Block D storyline or Chip Zdarsky’s comic book run, we might soon see Daredevil wearing an orange prison jumpsuit.
