Arnold Schwarzenegger’s $2.1B Sci-Fi Franchise Takes Over Paramount+ Charts in the U.S.

I’m so excited to see Arnold Schwarzenegger making a comeback – not on the big screen just yet, but on streaming charts! It’s amazing to see people rediscovering his classic sci-fi movies on Paramount+. Three of them are actually in the Top 10 right now in the US, which is incredible!

I was checking out the most-watched movies on Paramount+ and was surprised to see a real Terminator takeover! According to FlixPatrol, three of the films are currently in the Top 10. What’s really interesting is that Terminator 2: Judgment Day – arguably the best of the series – is actually the lowest ranked, sitting at number nine. Terminator Genisys is just above it at number eight, but it’s Terminator: Dark Fate that’s really doing well, landing at number two, squeezed in between Primate and Top Gun: Maverick. It’s a fun reminder of the franchise‘s staying power, even if the rankings are a bit unexpected.

James Cameron Co-Created the Terminator Franchise

The Terminator series began in 1984, created by James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd. The original film, The Terminator, features Arnold Schwarzenegger as a robotic killer sent from the future—2029—to 1984. His mission is to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) before her son can be born, as he is destined to save humanity from a dangerous AI called Skynet.

In The Terminator, Michael Biehn plays Kyle Reese, a soldier who travels back in time to safeguard Sarah Connor. Paul Winfield appears as Lieutenant Ed Traxler, and Lance Henriksen plays Hal Vukovich, a police officer. Despite a relatively small $6.4 million budget, the film was a massive success, earning $78 million around the world and impressing both viewers and critics.

The film The Terminator was a breakthrough for director James Cameron and helped establish Arnold Schwarzenegger as a major movie star. Cameron, Schwarzenegger, and Linda Hamilton later collaborated again on Terminator 2: Judgment Day, a sequel set eleven years after the original. This new film features Robert Patrick as a more advanced Terminator—one that can change shape—sent to 1995 with the mission of killing Sarah Connor’s ten-year-old son, John Connor.

Terminator 2 surpassed the success of the original Terminator, earning over $500 million globally and receiving widespread critical acclaim. Over the years, it’s become recognized as one of the best action, science fiction, and sequel films ever made, and is often considered the strongest film in the Terminator series.

The Terminator Franchise Never Reached the Highs of Judgment Day Again

With Judgment Day, James Cameron’s involvement and Linda Hamilton’s portrayal of Sarah Connor came to an end in the original Terminator series. The subsequent films, Rise of the Machines (2003) and Terminator Salvation (2009), shifted the focus to an adult John Connor, played by Nick Stahl and Christian Bale respectively.

As much as I loved the first two Terminator films, the sequels just didn’t hit the same way with critics. It eventually led to a complete reboot by Paramount with Terminator Genisys. It was cool to see Arnold Schwarzenegger back as the T-800, though an older version of him, and they brought in Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, and Jai Courtney to play different versions of John Connor, Sarah Connor, and Kyle Reese.

Both Genisys and the earlier Salvation were intended to launch new Terminator trilogies, but those plans were canceled when the films didn’t meet studio expectations. Later, James Cameron returned to help create Dark Fate (2019), which continued the story directly after Judgment Day. Linda Hamilton reprised her role as an older Sarah Connor, and Arnold Schwarzenegger played a T-800 who had already eliminated John Connor.

Despite hoping to revive the series, Dark Fate didn’t resonate with critics and marked the first financial failure for the Terminator franchise, earning just $261.1 million globally. As a result, the series has been put on hold, and future installments won’t include Arnold Schwarzenegger.

In 2025, James Cameron told The Hollywood Reporter that he felt it was time to introduce new characters to the Terminator franchise. He specifically wanted Arnold Schwarzenegger to be involved in Terminator: Dark Fate as a satisfying conclusion to his role as the T-800. Cameron believes the Terminator concept – including the idea of time travel and advanced AI – has room to grow, and he’s eager to explore fresh, unexpected stories.

You can now watch Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Terminator Genisys, and Terminator: Dark Fate on Paramount+.
