What the Heck Is Going On in the Back Room in Backrooms?

If you’ve ever worked in retail, you probably know there’s something unsettling about the store’s back room – all those boxes, extra inventory, and often, dim lighting. It’s a place you’d avoid, even if it meant escaping the busy sales floor. That feeling is the core of the new horror film Backrooms from A24, the first feature film by 20-year-old YouTuber Kane Parsons. The trailer shows a furniture store employee, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, finding a hidden passage to what seems like an endless maze of back rooms within the building. These rooms are mostly empty, with only a few scattered chairs or unsettling sights – like bodies partially sticking out of the floor. It’s the kind of place you might imagine the protagonist of House of Leaves would go to buy furniture.

After uncovering this strange phenomenon, Ejiofor convinces friends and colleagues – including Renate Reinsve and Mark Duplass – to investigate the mysterious back rooms. They wisely use ropes to ensure anyone leading the way can be pulled back if needed, a tactic reminiscent of the film The Mist. Parsons’s film is based on his web series, a project he’s been developing for a couple of years, and it appears to be building toward a final, climactic encounter within these unsettling spaces. Will they find a terrifying creature lurking inside, or is it all just an endless, confusing labyrinth like something from M.C. Escher? Whatever’s there, Google Maps won’t be able to help. Backrooms arrives in theaters on May 29.
