Minecraft Welcomes You To The Copper Age

Copper was added to Minecraft in June 2021 and quickly became a promising building material because of its unique ability to change color over time. Now, with the upcoming “Copper Age” update, Mojang is finally delivering on that potential, adding new ways to use all the copper you’ve been storing. The update releases next week, on September 30th.

Finally, players can now craft and equip copper gear! Copper armor offers a good balance between the protection of leather and iron, and includes full sets for both the player and their horse. A complete set of copper tools is also available, offering improved durability over stone but not quite matching iron. Best of all, these copper items won’t rust or corrode over time.

This update introduces copper chests, golems, and golem statues! You can get your first copper chest by crafting a copper golem – just combine copper blocks and a carved pumpkin. This new, friendly mob will then help organize your items by sorting them into regular chests around your base. And if a copper golem ever encounters an iron golem, you’re in for a really cute surprise!

When copper golems completely oxidize, they turn into decorative statues. You can reactivate a golem by removing the oxidation with an axe, or prevent oxidation altogether by applying wax. These statues aren’t just for show, though! Like an armor stand, you can cycle through different poses by interacting with them, letting you customize the look of your base. Plus, each pose emits a unique redstone signal when connected to a comparator, opening up exciting possibilities for redstone contraptions. We’re eager to see what creative things players build with this feature!

Now you can craft copper lanterns, torches (which have a green glow), chains, and bars to customize your hideout, and even select the color of the copper. Lightning rods will also develop a weathered look over time.

A really useful new feature is the shelf. These blocks can store up to three items, letting you quickly switch things in and out of your hotbar. If you place powered shelves together and use redstone, you can even swap your entire hotbar setup at once! This is great for keeping extra gear, or preparing different loadouts for different adventures.

Finally, we’re updating the dye icons to be clearer and easier to see, improving accessibility for everyone.

I was so excited at Minecraft Live! They revealed a ton of cool stuff coming soon, including the ‘Mounts of Mayhem’ update planned for the holidays in 2025. They’re also releasing ‘Friendly Fishing,’ which sounds like a great way to learn while playing. But honestly, the biggest surprise for me was the announcement that Dragon Ball Z is coming to Minecraft! I can’t wait to see that!
