Daniel Radcliffe, famous for playing Harry Potter, stars in a new film called Merrily We Roll Along, which will be available on Netflix starting April 4th. The movie is already getting a lot of buzz, not only because of its impressive cast, but also because it currently has a nearly perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Before Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along became available on streaming platforms, it first debuted as a Broadway production on November 16, 1981.
Daniel Radcliffe’s involvement with this project actually began on stage, where he performed with Jonathan Groff – famous for roles like King George III in Hamilton and Jesse St. James on Glee – and Lindsay Mendez, who is well-known for her long-running role as Sara Castillo on All Rise.
From 2023 to 2024, the three stars performed in a successful Broadway production of Merrily We Roll Along. In 2024, the show won multiple Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical, as well as awards for both leading and featured actors, and Best Orchestrations. A filmed version of the production was then released in movie theaters on December 5, 2025.
The professionally filmed concert is now available on Netflix and is receiving excellent reviews. Both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes overwhelmingly approve of the movie, with both groups giving it a 95% rating since it first came out in theaters.
The musical Merrily We Roll Along follows composer Franklin Shepard (Jonathan Groff) and his complicated thirty-year friendship with lyricist/playwright Charley Kringas (Daniel Radcliffe) and writer Mary Flynn (Lindsay Mendez). The story explores themes of friendship, the pursuit of success, and the sacrifices people make to achieve their dreams—asking how much of yourself you can lose along the way.
Honestly, I was already excited about this release, and Groff, Radcliffe, and Mendez completely blew me away! Given their talent, it wasn’t a surprise, but their performances were truly powerful and everyone seems to agree. Just a heads-up though – going in, think of it more like you’re watching a beautifully filmed stage show, not a big, flashy movie. It’s fantastic, just different than a typical blockbuster!
Just a heads-up: not everyone with Netflix will be able to watch Merrily We Roll Along when it comes out on April 4th, and it’s unknown if this will change. Currently, it looks like only those with Netflix plans that don’t include ads will have access, because of how the show has been licensed.
The release of Merrily We Roll Along on Netflix happens around the same time as the new Harry Potter TV series coming to HBO and Daniel Radcliffe’s current Broadway play, Every Brilliant Thing. This one-man show, where Radcliffe interacts with the audience, has been getting a lot of buzz, especially online.
