Netflix is taking a unique approach to entering the world of live sports. The disembodied hand, Thing, from the show Wednesday, will throw the ceremonial first pitch at the Major League Baseball Opening Night game between the Yankees and Giants. Thing will actually be present at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Wednesday night. While unusual, this isn’t the first time a non-human has had the honor – others include characters like Sadako from Ringu, Chewbacca, and even Ronald Reagan.
We have a few practical questions about how Thing will be presented. The special effects will allow Thing to move around freely, with the actor (Victor Dorobantu) digitally removed from the scenes. However, they likely won’t show the audience at Oracle Park the behind-the-scenes effect of seeing Dorobantu acting as Thing. So, it’s probable they’ll revert to a simpler approach – essentially having someone hidden in a box with just their hand visible, similar to the classic 1960s sitcom version. Will someone push Thing around on a cleaning cart, perhaps resembling Taylor Swift’s stage setup? It also seems like the actor playing Thing will have limited movement.
