The Handmaid’s Tale Spinoff The Testaments Officially Premieres in April 2026

This critically acclaimed series is considered by many to be one of the greatest shows ever made. Even after ending a year ago, the story is being continued with a new installment.

After six seasons, The Handmaid’s Tale concluded on April 8, 2025. A year later, on April 8, 2026, its sequel, The Testaments, will begin streaming on Hulu, continuing the story.

The Testaments Follows Hannah’s Story

Season 6 of The Handmaid’s Tale effectively dismantled Gilead and brought down those responsible for its oppressive rule. The season concludes with June at the former home of Fred and Serena Waterford, where she begins to share her experiences in her own voice.

For all six seasons of the show, June’s biggest wish was to find her daughter, Hannah. Despite numerous tries, she couldn’t rescue Hannah, and Hannah ended up growing up within the oppressive society of Gilead. The novel The Testaments picks up Hannah’s story and continues it.

This sequel takes place years after the original series and tells the story through three viewpoints. One is Hannah, known as Agnes in Gilead, who begins to explore her identity after a sheltered and religious upbringing. Chase Infiniti plays the character.

The upcoming novel, The Testaments, will feature the return of Aunt Lydia, now heading a school that prepares young women for marriage. Having witnessed the true nature of the regime, Aunt Lydia believes she can change it by educating the next generation of wives. Ann Dowd will again play the role.

Daisy, portrayed by Lucy Halliday, is a key new character. She’s a teenage girl from Canada whose world is shattered when she discovers a shocking family secret connecting her to Gilead.

The film features Eva Foote as Aunt Estee, Kira Guloien as Rosa, Amy Seimetz as Paula, Brad Alexander as Garth, Birva Pandya as Miriam, Zarrin Darnell-Martin as Aunt Gabbana, Mattea Conforti as Becka Grove, Shechinah Mpumlwana as Jehosheba, Mabel Li as Aunt Vidala, and Isolde Ardies as Huldah.

The Testaments Will Expand Gilead

As a big fan of The Handmaid’s Tale, I was excited to learn Bruce Miller, the creator of that incredible show, also brought us The Testaments. While it’s not official yet, Elisabeth Moss hasn’t been confirmed to star again as June, but she is still involved as an executive producer, which is great to see!

The premiere of The Testaments, the sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, recently took place at the Series Mania festival. Creator Bruce Miller shared that the new show explores a different side of Gilead, focusing on the lives of those with power and privilege. While The Handmaid’s Tale centered on the most oppressed members of society, The Testaments shows the women at the very top – and Miller hints that their lives aren’t much better.

The follow-up to the original novel came out in 2019. Bruce noted that, as the character Margaret says, throughout history, women have faced terrible treatment. However, he believes Margaret wrote The Testaments to show that there’s still reason to be optimistic about the future for women, suggesting they will continue to progress.

The Testaments premieres on Apr. 8 on Hulu.
