Reddit is considering implementing human verification for its users

Reddit is exploring new ways to verify that real people are using the site, as they work to reduce the number of bots and spam.

In a recent interview with TBPN, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman explained that AI tools like translation and help with writing in other languages are now indispensable. He stated, “It’s simply the reality of today’s world.”

He explained that while certain approaches were fine, it was important to include a way for people to confirm information on the website.

As Huffman put it, “Reddit is for humans. That is our platform. That is our product.”

Reddit considering face or touch ID to counter bots

So, I was listening to this interview with Huffman, and he was talking about adding a way to prove you’re a real person, not a bot. He mentioned a few ideas, but the simpler ones really stood out to me. Things like using Face ID or Touch ID – basically, something that needs a real, physical action from a human. A bot just couldn’t do that, which is exactly what we need to keep things secure.

Some countries already use methods like ID checks to follow the rules, and these were suggested as more strict possibilities.

I never expected Reddit to require Face ID, but it’s clear something needs to be done about the fake accounts and bots. The challenge is figuring out how to convince users – even those who just browse – that scanning their faces is a good solution.

Alexis Ohanian, a co-founder and former chairman of Reddit, responded to a recent interview by saying he didn’t expect Reddit to require Face ID. However, he acknowledged the need to address the problem of fake accounts and bots, and expressed doubt about whether Redditors would accept face scanning as a solution.

On the platform itself, users voiced their concerns about the change, with one saying:

I’m planning to start acting like I’m on the internet in real life – basically, just hanging out in public places like grocery stores and reacting to what people say or purchase, maybe giving a thumbs up or down to strangers.

Someone else pointed out that would completely fix the issue by eliminating all remaining human users.
