Over five days, a 33-year-old man attempted to rob six Chase Bank locations in New York City, but only managed to steal a total of $605.
The NYPD is searching for Gustavo DeJesus Torres for a series of bank robberies. Between March 13th and 17th, he allegedly handed tellers notes demanding money at banks in Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx.
He managed to steal some money during three robberies, taking $320 from a bank in Jackson Heights and $265 from one in Flatbush, Brooklyn.
‘Success’ was short-lived
According to police, Torres only managed to get $20 during one visit to a Harlem branch. His other three attempts to rob the bank were unsuccessful, and he left with nothing.
The New York Times reports that Torres ran away after each robbery and was seen on subway security cameras. Footage showed him attempting to hide among other passengers while carrying a coffee cup.

Torres may not have been a complete novice. A similar bank robbery occurred in New Jersey in 2021, where a 29-year-old man successfully stole $6,000 by passing a note to the teller that read, “I’m heavily armed, don’t make a scene.”
I couldn’t believe it when I heard he was arrested again last month! Apparently, he robbed a TD Bank down in TriBeCa, and they said he got away with around $600. It seems like this might have been part of a string of robberies he was planning.
Bank robberies aren’t always well-planned. For example, in late 2025, a man attempted to rob a bank he’d already robbed ten years before.
