Even though it’s been over a decade since season 3 of Hannibal aired, fans of the show shouldn’t lose hope for a fourth season. Created by Bryan Fuller and originally debuting on NBC in 2013, Hannibal is widely considered one of the best psychological thrillers of the 2010s. The show centers around FBI profiler Will Graham and his complex relationship with the infamous Hannibal Lecter.

Okay, so Hannibal is a show I’m really into, and while Hugh Dancy’s character is important, Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal Lecter? Seriously iconic. He plays this brilliant forensic psychiatrist who also happens to be a serial killer and, yeah, a cannibal. The really fascinating part is the messed-up connection he forms with Will Graham, constantly testing how much empathy Will has for killers and even trying to turn him into one. It’s a really dark and compelling dynamic.

Initially, Hannibal began as a standard crime-of-the-week show. However, by its third season, it had evolved into a much more complex and daring series. Season 3 uniquely wove together elements from Thomas Harris’ novels – Red Dragon, Hannibal, and Hannibal Rising – creating a particularly ambitious and intricate storyline.

Hannibal Season 4 Is Currently Not Possible Due To Rights Issues

Fans were naturally disappointed when the popular show was canceled before a fourth season could be made. Since then, the show’s creator has repeatedly expressed his wish to adapt Thomas Harris’s 1988 novel, The Silence of the Lambs, in that planned season. While The Silence of the Lambs was famously made into a highly acclaimed movie in 1990, the creator had a different vision for the series.

As a big fan of Hannibal, I’ve been following the news about a potential season four with a lot of interest – and it’s complicated! The rights situation is a total mess right now, especially since Martha De Laurentiis, who was a key producer on the show, sadly passed away in 2021. Things get even trickier because Amazon MGM Studios owns the rights to The Silence of the Lambs, which means Prime Video seems like the most logical place for Hannibal to come back if it does happen. Fingers crossed they can sort everything out!

Originally, Hannibal aired on NBC, so Peacock – NBC’s streaming service – might be the most logical place for it to come back. Adding to the complexity, the sequel series Clarice, which Bryan Fuller wasn’t involved with, only lasted one season on CBS, potentially opening up another option for where the show could continue.

Hannibal’s Cast & Creative Team Are Keen To Make Season 4

Despite the difficulties, Bryan Fuller is still determined to create a fourth season of Hannibal. He recently told ScreenRant at the Saturn Awards that Harris is working to bring all the rights for the novels and any future adaptations together, hoping to get the cast and crew back for another season.

Fuller expressed his desire to oversee all aspects of the show as Harris continued to pursue the storyline of reuniting Clarice and Hannibal. He previously told the Horror Queers podcast on BloodyDisgusting that he has a clear vision for a fourth season of Hannibal, and has discussed his interest in adapting The Silence of the Lambs.

What Hannibal Season 4’s Story Would Be

Fuller has even thought about who would be perfect for the role, hoping Zendaya could play Clarice Starling. This is a key character, as Starling is the main protagonist in both the book and film versions of The Silence of the Lambs.

Okay, so it’s a bit of a mystery how Fuller plans to bring Will Graham, played by Hugh Dancy, back for season four. He’s not in the original book or the first movie! But honestly, The Silence of the Lambs film is so iconic, I wouldn’t be shocked if Fuller decides to really shake things up and tell that story in a totally new way for the show.

Hannibal Season 4 Needs To Happen

Anthony Hopkins won an Oscar for his performance as Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs, even though he was only in the movie for a relatively short time – many people actually overestimate how much screen time he had. That’s why a new adaptation of the novel, like Fuller’s planned series, is a good idea – it would likely focus more on Hannibal and change the story significantly.

Johnathan Demme’s film The Silence of the Lambs had a huge impact on cinema, noticeably influencing movies such as Se7en, Copycat, Fallen, and The Bone Collector. The film’s portrayal of Clarice Starling also sparked public interest in criminal profiling, leading to popular TV series like Criminal Minds and the critically acclaimed Mindhunter on Netflix.

Hannibal Resolving Its Rights Issues Could Make Season 4 Better

Viewers deserve to see Fuller’s new spin on this story, which first aired over three decades ago. As the showrunner, Fuller can bring a completely unique perspective to the well-known plot, focusing on a different central character. Although the show is currently facing rights issues that might delay this, it could actually benefit the series in the long run.

Once the rights issues are settled, a fourth season of Hannibal could have complete creative freedom. This would allow the show’s creators to include any characters or storylines from Thomas Harris’s novels without limitations, potentially resulting in a season shaped entirely by Bryan Fuller’s artistic vision, rather than by what was practically possible before.
