With the conclusion of Season 2, Cross solved the case of the serial killer, but left viewers wondering what’s next for Alex Cross (Aldis Hodge) as both a detective and a forensic psychologist. Since its debut in 2024, the Amazon Prime Video thriller has become very popular, proving to be a strong competitor to shows like Reacher.
Season 2 of Cross explores tough questions about right and wrong, focusing on Alex’s work, those in charge, and whether it’s better to help those in need or just benefit the wealthy. The story expands beyond Alex, giving more focus to compelling characters like Kayla and John, leaving viewers with plenty to think about. Will Alex return for a third season of Cross?
Is ‘Cross’ Returning For Season 3?

Amazon Prime Video
Fans of Cross have reason to celebrate! Amazon Prime Video has renewed the show for a third season, which will begin streaming right after the Season 2 finale. Just like the first two seasons, Season 3 will consist of eight episodes and will be available to watch exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in all regions where the service is offered.
Ben Watkins, who created the show and also played Roy in Season 2, has consistently said he envisions it lasting four seasons. If everything works out, we might even see more! He told The Hollywood Reporter that he knows how the story will end and that the finale will include references to characters from the original James Patterson books the series is based on.
Amazon Prime Video’s Cross Season 1 was a big hit, reaching 40 million viewers worldwide in its first 20 days and becoming one of the top three most-watched premieres of 2025. It even hit number one in over 100 countries! With strong ratings – 76% on Rotten Tomatoes for Season 1 and a remarkable 95% for Season 2 – Amazon is expected to continue supporting the show for its planned four seasons. A third season is confirmed, though based on past releases, it probably won’t be available until next year. Season 1 premiered in November 2024, and Season 2 followed in February 2026.
‘Cross’ Season 3 Will Address Alex’s Departure

Amazon Prime Video
We don’t yet know the main plot for season 3 of Cross, but Alex will likely face a new, challenging serial killer case that tests him both physically and emotionally as he tries to save people. However, before that can happen, the show needs to resolve the personal struggles Alex was dealing with at the end of season 2.
Alex is furious that powerful people covered up Crestbrook Industries’ misdeeds to protect their money, connections, and status. He’s torn because he’s dedicated to protecting others, but he can’t continue working with people who ignore such terrible injustices, particularly when children are involved.
In an interview with TV Insider, actor Hodge suggested that Alex didn’t quit his job because he was defeated, but because he realized he couldn’t change a flawed system. Hodge believes Alex still believes in justice and will simply pursue it in a different way. This has led fans to wonder if Alex will become a vigilante like Jack Reacher, operating outside the law, or perhaps a private investigator or a ‘gun for hire’ similar to the character Colter Shaw in Tracker. Many are curious how this resignation will affect the show’s next season. If the show follows the source material, Alex will explore private psychology, join the FBI, and eventually return to the D.C. police department as a consultant, much like the character Morgan in High Potential.
Season 3 of Cross will center around Alex’s return and how it changes the direction of the new cases. He’s surprised by how deeply this particular case affects him, even finding himself understanding the motives of a killer, Luz (played by Jeanine Mason). Alex may be driven to prevent similar injustices – even those committed by those in power – hoping to stop others from feeling driven to such desperate acts.
The Loose Ends ‘Cross’ Season 3 Needs to Tie Up
The last scene of Cross Season 2 hinted that Luz might still be alive, showing a tattooed woman walking. This suggests she could reappear in future seasons, even if she’s no longer working with the serial killer from Season 2. However, Season 3 will probably introduce a completely new case.
Alex also needs to deal with some personal issues. His relationship with Kayla fell apart after she prioritized her career at the FBI, possibly ruining things for good. She was put in a difficult position – tested by her boss and then promoted for succeeding – which will likely make her even more ambitious. Adding to the tension, Alex is now receiving attention as a hero, while Kayla feels overlooked. It will be compelling to see how Kayla’s feelings develop and if she might become an antagonist.
Elle and Alex still have feelings for each other, despite their difficult history. The third season of Cross will delve into how their relationship changes over time. Viewers are wondering if Elle will ever be able to fully forgive Alex, and how being apart will affect her connection with his children.

In Season 2 of Cross, John has a personal storyline where he discovers his biological mother and learns a shocking truth: his Nana Mama (Juanita Jennings) kept his origins a secret his whole life. To make matters worse, his friend Alex knew about it all along but didn’t tell him, straining their relationship. Now that Nana Mama has revealed his father’s name and address, John is embarking on an emotional journey to find him, promising a significant and interesting character development. This search will likely introduce us to new characters as well.
Who Will Be in Cross Season 3?

Amazon Prime Video
Most of the key characters from Cross will be back for Season 3, including Hodge, Tal, Mustafa, Jennings, and Walkes. Caleb Elijah and Melody Hurd will reprise their roles as Alex’s children, Damon and Jannie, and Mercedes de la Zerda will return as Detective Amielynn Vega. It’s currently unknown whether Jennifer Wigmore will be back as Chief April Anderson, or if Johnny Ray Gill will reappear as the unpredictable former officer, Bobby Trey.
Now that there’s a hint Luz might still be alive, actress Mason could return to play her. Matthew Lillard might also reprise his role as Lance Durand. Additionally, Watkins played a significant character in Season 2 – Roy, Kayla’s boss. If Roy continues to be important to the plot and isn’t working with Alex anymore, we can expect to see him return as Kayla’s strict and challenging supervisor.
The third season will introduce new characters, including the killer and John’s father. While the actors haven’t been announced yet, fans are thrilled about the return of Cross and eager to see what happens with this compelling character.
