Although Hulu decided not to move forward with a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, some fans are still interested in seeing what the new version could have looked like. Sarah Michelle Gellar, who originally played Buffy, doesn’t want the pilot episode to be released. In an interview with Page Six Radio, she said she actively hopes it remains unseen.
It might seem odd that Gellar doesn’t want people to view a project she cared about deeply, but she has her reasons.
What Happened to New Sunnydale
The planned series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, was intended to follow the story of the original show. Sarah Michelle Gellar was going to reprise her role as Buffy, but this time as a mentor to a new Slayer, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong. A pilot episode, written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman and directed by Chloé Zhao, was filmed for the show.

Hulu unexpectedly decided against ordering a full season of the show. According to sources who spoke with Deadline after the project was cancelled, the pilot wasn’t quite ready. Variety reported that the pilot was filmed quickly with limited footage, and would have needed significant re-filming. Additionally, new cast members didn’t make a strong impact.
Gellar admitted the first episode wasn’t perfect. She explained that pilots are rarely fully polished when they’re first made and are often used as a way to learn and improve. It’s unusual for a pilot episode to be shown exactly as it was initially filmed; they’re typically revised based on feedback.
Those familiar with the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer might recall that the unaired pilot episode was quite different from the rest of the series. It starred different actors in important roles—like Willow—and had a more lighthearted, less polished feel with simpler special effects. Sarah Michelle Gellar explained, “It really was a different show, but pilots are meant to be learning experiences.”

Knowing this background helps explain why Gellar was worried. While an early test version of the Buffy pilot ended up on DVD, the first pilot, called New Sunnydale, probably won’t be officially released. However, a supposed leaked copy of the script is available online.
Why Gellar Doesn’t Want It Seen
Online reports indicate Buffy doesn’t show up until close to the end of the episode. Some viewers have commented that the dialogue feels awkward and that Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character isn’t portrayed as strongly as usual. Gellar herself described the script leak as disappointing and asked fans not to watch leaked versions, explaining that they wouldn’t see the show as the creators intended.
The planned revival of New Sunnydale won’t happen as originally intended. Sarah Michelle Gellar told People magazine that a Hulu executive hindered the reboot, openly admitting he disliked the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer and hadn’t even watched the whole series.

So, I just heard back from Disney about that show everyone was excited about, and honestly, it’s a bit of a bummer. A spokesperson told me that deciding not to make the series wasn’t about the people behind it – they really like and respect the creators, Lilla and Nora, and wanted to make that clear.
A Final Word on the Buffy Reboot
Gellar wrapped up the interview by asking fans to watch the first movie again and check out her new film, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. She concluded by saying, “That’s the best thing we can all do right now.”
Considering how recent TV revivals have gone, it might be best to leave Buffy the Vampire Slayer untouched and let the original series stand on its own.
