Nintendo preparing new Switch 2 model for EU with removable battery: report

Sources say Nintendo is developing a new version of the Switch 2 for Europe that will let users easily swap out the console’s battery and the batteries in its new Joy-Con 2 controllers themselves.

This update is happening because the European Union is introducing new ‘right to repair’ rules. These rules will require companies to design devices that are simpler to fix and keep working.

I just read something really interesting! Apparently, according to a report in the Nikkei newspaper, Nintendo is planning a slight hardware change for the new Switch 2 specifically for Europe. They’re making it so we can actually swap out the battery ourselves, which is awesome because you can’t do that with the current Switch. It’s a small thing, but it could make a big difference for how long we can play on the go!

Currently, the Switch 2 has a battery that’s firmly attached and hard to take out. However, a newer model is being designed to make battery replacement much easier for regular users.

So, things are changing because of some new rules coming from the EU next year. Basically, they’re making companies build stuff that’s easier to fix and trying to cut down on all the electronic garbage we create. It’s good news for us gamers, honestly – hopefully, it means we won’t have to replace our consoles and PCs so often!

This new version will initially be available in Europe, but Nintendo may release it in other regions later, based on customer interest and local laws.

Sources indicate the update won’t be limited to the console; the Joy-Con controllers, which also use rechargeable batteries, will be affected too.

Currently, Nintendo hasn’t announced if the updated model will be available outside of Europe.

The new EU law was approved in June 2024 and became official the next month. Each member state has until July 2026 to adapt the law to their own national regulations.
