It’s tough to look at a game like MLB The Show 26 and properly grade it.
MLB The Show 26 is still a top-tier sports game, and improvements like the new hitting features are great. The Franchise Mode has been completely updated, and Diamond Dynasty continues to be a highlight. Despite all the good things, though, I’m left with mixed feelings about the overall experience.
Whenever things start to feel good, something frustrating happens to ruin the moment. This creates a mixed experience, supported by what’s still strong, but it’s becoming clear that problems are starting to show, and that worries me.
MLB The Show is Still One of the Best Sports Games You Can Play

MLB The Show’s fundamental gameplay has remained fairly consistent over the years, and that’s not necessarily a drawback. Baseball naturally lends itself well to a video game format, something that hasn’t always been true for other sports like football. The game feels like a strategic battle where you control both offense and defense, and MLB The Show consistently captures that feeling with its presentation.
The game does a great job of finding a sweet spot between being realistic and being playable. Baseball is a difficult sport – even when you do everything correctly, you won’t always win. A truly great hitter only gets a hit about 30% of the time, and the game reflects that. While it can be annoying to hit the ball perfectly only to have it caught, it’s good to see that challenge represented in the gameplay.
Using the Plate Coverage Indicator (PCI) aiming method instead of simple timing gives you more precise control over your swings, leading to better results overall. This involves pointing the analog stick to where you predict the pitch will be, but it’s a challenging technique to master.
MLB The Show 26 makes hitting more accessible by letting you set your batting focus without constantly moving the controller stick. As someone who was never a great hitter, this feature lets me feel like I can actually connect with the ball! The game also improves pitching with a new ‘Bear Down Pitching’ mode, giving you more control when you really need to nail a crucial pitch.
There are a Lot of Great Ways to Play MLB The Show
I recently played WWE 2K26 and, like last year, I was impressed with how much you can do in the game, especially with its different modes. Few sports games offer that much variety, though MLB The Show is a close competitor. MLB The Show’s Diamond Dynasty mode is better than most when it comes to avoiding aggressive in-game purchases, but I’m worried that might be changing soon, so it’s something to watch out for.
Franchise Mode remains incredibly enjoyable, and it’s where you’ll finally see teams other than the Los Angeles Dodgers signing free agents. Like Diamond Dynasty, this mode is better than what other baseball games offer. While it can be frustrating to pay full price for a game every year that doesn’t feel drastically different, you’re still getting a really well-made baseball experience.
There’s a lot of good in MLB The Show 26, and yet, here I am, uncertain about my time with it.
Honestly, the best part of any sports game for me is always Road to the Show, and MLB The Show really nails it. Starting as a high school player, getting recruited to college, and then working your way up through the minors to finally play for your favorite team is just so much fun. I’m really excited to hear that MLB The Show 26 is actually adding to this mode instead of just keeping it the same, which is awesome.
I would have enjoyed Road to the Show even if it hadn’t been updated this year – it’s just that fun! It’s a great way to learn the game and get used to any new features. But playing it also highlights some areas where the game could be improved, especially when it comes to how things look and are presented.
The Commentary and Presentation Are Getting Old
As much as I love my time during Road to the Show, the commentary gets really old, really fast.
I’m tired of the game constantly pointing out big choices, like whether my player should go pro or play college ball. And it keeps reminding me that high school games are shorter than professional ones. While the gameplay of MLB The Show is great, the way the game presents itself is really falling behind and it’s becoming more obvious.
Compared to last year’s Madden, which also had its problems, the broadcast team of Mike Tirico and Greg Olsen really made the games feel special. I don’t feel that same excitement with the current team. It’s not that Jon Sciambi isn’t good – he is – but several factors combine to make this broadcast less engaging.
Singleton, Mendoza, and Flores aren’t performing well, and it’s made worse by how often their lines of dialogue repeat. Hearing the same conversations over and over, especially early in the game, is really frustrating and holds back what is otherwise a solid experience.
MLB The Show 26 Is Truly the Aaron Judge of Sports Games
In many ways, Aaron Judge is the perfect cover athlete for MLB The Show 26.
I really enjoy MLB The Show 26, and honestly, it’s been a solid game all season. It delivers a great experience and feels like a top-tier title – definitely worth the purchase. But here’s the thing: when you get to the really important moments, it just… falls apart. And that’s new for me. The more I play, the more frustrated I get, which hasn’t happened with previous versions of the game. It’s disappointing because it could be perfect.
As a huge Yankees fan, it’s honestly frustrating watching Aaron Judge. It feels like the bigger the moment, the harder he struggles. Remember that home run in the 2025 ALCS that everyone was talking about? Turns out the wind really helped that one out. And the fact that his most famous playoff homer came against a pitcher who was betting on games? It just takes away from everything. He seems to consistently deliver when the stakes are lowest, which is… disappointing, to say the least.
It’s great to see MLB The Show 26 improving the Road to the Show mode instead of just sticking with what they already have.
He’s a fantastic hitter during the regular season, and one of the best players of his generation, but he consistently struggles in the playoffs. That pretty much sums up MLB The Show 26: it’s a good game, but doesn’t quite live up to expectations. The online experience is especially frustrating due to ongoing technical problems.
Closing Comments
MLB The Show 26 remains a top-tier sports game, but it’s beginning to feel dated. While it’s improved in many ways, some persistent problems are becoming harder to overlook. This year, it’s less clear whether the game justifies its price, as the growing list of issues overshadows its strengths.
